Please post any of the questions, comments, or concerns you have regarding the Winter Prose Competition 2011 here so that they can be easily answered and found by other individuals.

Hey, Jack.

If we've already entered the Winter Prose Competition on the Protagonize Pub thread, I'm assuming we don't have to re-enter the competition on this thread, which is the Seasonal Prose Competition Thread. Am I correct in that assumption?

If we do have to re-enter the Seasonal Prose Competion, I'd like to re-enter in the competition that I have previously entered in the previously official Protagonize Winter Competition thread, in the Protagonize Pub.

Clear as mud? Alll.....righty, then.

p.s.
Simply put, the competitors who signed up on the protag pub thread don't have to re- sign up on this thread, do they?

@moonwalker +1 for most confusing question I've seen in a long time. ;)

@moon, provided i don't suffer a sudden bout of amnesia, i should be able to remember that there is a sign-up thread in the Ptag Pub as well as in this group. let's hope nothing drastic happens between now and the next forty minutes.

one of my jobs is to deal with drunk university students and explain to them that they did in fact sign a tenancy contract at the beginning of the year. i've learned to see through mud, among other things.

@Nick & Jack.

I already knew the answer, but it's late, and my thinking gets weird late at night, probably because I'm not working, or sleeping. Also, I just felt like being a smartass.

Good to see she does that for everyone ^_^

Will I be penalised for being Antipodean and it not being winter?

@Lachness-Monster Nope, not at all. All the timing goes by Protagonize Standard Time, and Ptag's home base in Vancouver is currently experiencing winter. I also refuse to call this competition anything else when I'm surrounded in snow, hah.

@Lach
I don't do that to everyone, just those people who live so far away, that they're not likely to appear on my doorstep with a stink bomb. *snicker*

Antipodean - is that Aussie for antipolitician, or antipollution, or antipodiatist, or antiprimate, or antipomegranate, or ...

@Anyone
So... is GMT, PST but take eight hours? Or do you add eight hours?

Antipom is a fair assessment of what I am but Antipodean (derived from Antipode, two points diamtetrically opposit eachother on the earths surface) is Pom for Aussie, because they can't read maps or use google earth properly.

GMT is PST + 8. You're 8 hours ahead of them.

As to translating that into Aussie time... o.O?
I just know that my hubby called at bedtime here and it was noon there, and he could have called me in the morning when I woke up though he'd be going to bed... Then there is that date line thing so... Yeah confusing. I'm glad he's home now.

And it's now time to deposite my kids into bed for nap time.

Re: the whole time thing, I've tried to be as fair as possible in when things will be posted and due. For example, if I had just posted everything and had it due at noon PST every time, that would give an unfair advantage to people who don't live in the PST timezone, since they'd have to get up extra early or stay up extra late just to have the same shot. Savvy?

If you're utterly confused about timezones (like me) then here's a world clock you can personalize, preset to Vancouver.

I've never even seen snow, I always just assumed it was a lie, like unicorns or the cake.

@LuneXian Yes, the deadline for applications was a week ago. verse47 is still taking applications for the Winter Poetry Tournament as far as I know, if you're interested in that.

All competitors, if you have not replied to my email to confirm your spot in the competition please do so immediately! I need to know that you are receiving my emails; it's crucial to the competition. Thanks

So I'm thinking about challenge one here and... can you give me some sort of definaition of character?

I have a thought and idea, but I'm not sure if it would qualify for a character....

Your openness makes this hard, *gnarrr* *grin*

characters are the people, or things personified, who act out the narrative in your story. characters can be human, alien, animal, or otherwise. however, this is a competition so you should be wary of pressing boundaries too far; you might not want to have a story starring an acorn and the leaf above him. savvy?

So a dead person probably pushes that boundry a bit far unless they act as a ghost... yeah I kind of figured I wouldn't want to puch my luck too far. Time to go with idea 2. *grin*

Thank you oh compitition runner. *giggles*

a dead person is a character. there's the potential for ghosts, as you said, or flashbacks. this first challenge is extreeeeemely open, which will make the next ones harder, heheheh.

Bah then I could have used my original idea, oh well not changing now.

So can I get a solid definition of hook please. *grin*

(I won't ask for setting because I'm pretty sure I have that one down.)

About this group

The official group for the SPC on Protagonize.

The Seasonal Prose Competition is a contest open to all Protagonize authors on a seasonal basis. It is very similar to its counterpart, and "older sibling," the Seasonal Poetry Tournament. The competition is user-run and (usually) does not offer prizes beyond the title of champion and the feeling of accomplishment that accompanies it.

The first ever competition was held in Summer 2010 by the World Building group, and after that trial run has graduated to its very own group. Future competitions will be announced in this group, so join up if you're interested in competing or maybe even hosting!

FAQ

When is the next competition?
We try to have two full format competitions a year, usually one in the summer and one in the winter. Occasionally there will be smaller competitions at other times of the year. Check out the News box below for up-to-date info.

How do I enter the competitions?
First off you have to be a member of this group. After that, check out the description of the competition in question to see how to enter. Some might just require you to leave a comment, others might require the completion of a challenge piece.

Why is this a competition?
Initially we held a competition simply to differentiate ourselves from the Poetry Tournament. Now, we go with the competition format because of the nature of the challenges: they require storytelling, and it's unfair to ask people to stop telling a story should they not score high enough in a challenge.

Who's behind the competition?
That changes as often as the seasons. Typically it's Jackerbie, but other hosts have included Elorithryn, and BDrewCollier.

What's with Snoopy?
Snoopy is our unofficial official mascot, 'cause he's a rad typewriter-using dawg. Yes, dawg. Peace out home slice.

Snoopy and the Peanuts characters are a registered trademark of PEANUTS Worldwide LLC
