Music: What's it to you?

I am a sixteen year old girl with a love for music. But not just any music. I don't like half the stuff out today. I love the old music. Remember it? The days of Bon Jovi, Forigner, Queen? Old rock bands. I also love singers like Buddy Holly.
Don't get me wrong, I love some music today too. I'm a huge fan of Taylor Swift, and I won't lie and say I don't like some of Justin Beiber's stuff. Hey, he's talented alright!
I also love music by Matchbox Twenty and Rob Thomas.

So, my point in making this discussion is to ask what type of music you all listen to, and your opinion on where music is today. And I'm talking all types of music. What are some of your favorite bands and singers, some of your favorite songs?

The other day my friend put her ear buds in my ear and I was greeted with the word "shots" being said over and over again. I can see how it can be a good dance song, but I looked at her funny and asked what had ever happened to Bon Jovi and Buddy Holly. Because in my opinion, it's hard to listen to a song that's pretty much only made up of the word "shots".

But that's just me. Anyone want to talk about it?

The modern genre of so called music that has emerged I find repulsive.
I, unlike you, find Justin Bieber untollerable. Along with many others. Especially those who have come out of disney's shadow and become Pop stars.
Real music, music that meant something can often be traced to the early, and I mean early, years of this centuary and before that.
Mr. Cash and Mr. Jules have sung two of the most iconic songs in recent decades. ( I am refering to Cash' cover of Hurt and Jules' song Mad World )
I want more songs like this. Adele in my opinion tried to go down this everlasting route and, in the eyes of many she done so successfully, but I feel that she failed and instead of becoming iconic, it feels to me as if she has fallen into a depressive need my boyfriend back kind of genre.
I do of course love many other songs and bands, but I think I should end my rant before I go to far.
So to sum up.
Cash and Jules = Great
Adele and Bieber = Bad.
=)
I listen to older rock and heavy metal. Marilyn Manson is my favourite and no disrespect to Justin Beiber's fans but he's terrible! Adele is okay but all of her songs are about breaking up and get kind of depressing. AC/DC, Alice Cooper and many others are amazing. I agree with DTMN, Disney 'singers' are over-commercialized and generally terrible. I really like Bon Jovi as well. I know it might seem weird that I love Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy but i ADORE them!!
Marilyn Manson's song Posthuman and cover of Working Class Hero are amazing!
Guns 'n' Roses and The Stone Roses are other faves of mine! I also love Nirvana, Linkin Park and Kiss.

@DTMN You're right, Justin Beiber is on my list of 'singers' that should never have been recorded. I feel like smashing the radio when one of his 'songs' come on.
I enjoy mostly everything, except for techno, bluegrass, and screamo (with the exception of Skrillex and not even a handful of bluegrass songs).

My favorite genre of music, I'd have to say, is the 50s stuff. The Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, etc.), The Platters, The Temptations, Patsy Cline, The Drifters...I could go on forever. There are a ton that I'm just in love with, but it's a long list.

A very close second is the Woodstock-type rock-n-roll. Sixties and Seventies.

The Beatles are my all-time favorite band, hands down, no doubt about. I have tons of Beatles memorabilia and I've been to a Paul McCartney concert (an experience I count as one of the best of my life).

I also listen to classical occasionally, but I DO listen to some of today's music. I enjoy Adele, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Eminem, etc.

So yeah, my musical preferences are very...varied. Haha. :)

I just believe that everyone has different preferences, and no one genre or band "sucks". :)
Yeah, I hate most modern/mainstream 'music' too, especially people like Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Katy Perry etc. Although I don't mind Lady Gaga :)

I listen to a really wide range of music, I love Guns n Roses, Queen, Mumford and Sons, Avenged Sevenfold, Christina Perri, Johnny Cash, Evanescence and I ADORE Nirvana.

Coldplay is my guilty pleasure :/ I'm kinda ashamed to admit it but, yeah I really like them :)
@Ebony-Rose Mumford and Sons <3
I completely forgot about them.
A lot of people I know lost respect for Lady Gaga after the meat-dress but I admired her more, because she caused controversy. I think she reminds me of a female Marilyn Manson.
Most people find what I listen to weird. I love alternative music, like Panic! At The Disco and punk-rock/rock - You Me At Six, Frank Turner etc. - but I also love indie and indie rock. stuff like NeverShoutNever, Duke Special and The Divine Comedy.
Then there's steampunk :P The Cog Is Dead, Abney Park, The Clockwork Quartet are among the steampunk I like. Oh, I do love the Victorian era. :)

I generally don't like popular music (as you can tell) but I won't deny that some of them aren't talented. Adele, Ed Sheeran and Justin Beiber are all very talented, I just don't like JB's songs.
Great discussion!

I have found myself reaching back to embrace my inner headbanger from the 80's. Lately I'm lurking around iTunes downloading AC/DC, Metallica, KISS, and curiously wishing I could re-grow my mullet and play my electric bass in a retro band.

And oddly, I'm a trained singer with a music degree so by contrast I sing a lot of musical theater, opera, and good ol' Sinatra.
@SoggycityBob i LOVE AC/DC,especially highway to hell! I also love Metallica!
@Ebony-Rose I love Nirvana (especially Lithium, Man Who Sold the World and Smells Like Teen Spirit)
It feels so great to know that I'm not alone on all of this music stuff!
I love Queen, the Beatles, Bon Jovi, Journey... I could go on. But you don't need to rant on all of the music here today. I admit, a bunch of that Taylor Gang crap and Young Money don't really make me happy. I mean, seriously. Taylor Gang's "Young, Wild, and Free" just makes me think "Oh, so you smoke weed, get drunk, and decide to sing about it all in a song? Oh, but you're having fun! So I guess I won't call the cops on you as long as you're having a jolly good time ruining your life!"
As for Justin Bieber, he falls under the category of I-Listen-To-Him-When-I'm-Feeling-Really-Sappy-Music. Seriously. But I guess he must have a lot of bravery to go out on stage and sing without a bullet-proof vest, so I respect him.
You might like the Fray. I do. I also listen to Civil Twilight and a whole lot of Switchfoot, as they are my favorite band. I also listen to some Paramore, but not much, as well as blink 182 and Coldplay. I lovelovelove music. So much fun. So many things inside of it to change your emotions.

I'm a hipster. What can I say?
anything from 40's and 50's to present and anything from enya to cradle of filth. I like my cheesy 70's and 80's the most. Anyone who doesn't like Meatloaf and Queen I find weird. The only music I cannot stand is hardcore rap it makes no sense to me whatsoever.
peace out :-D
music is my world

@Lindsey I totally agree with you. I think that people like Justin Beiber are talented... and if they wern't, they wouldn't be famous. I was dragged to the JB movie with my friend, and at that point in time, I really did not like him. At all. lol. But then I saw how actually talented and level headed he is. He is an AMAZING drum player. AMAZING. And that ought to count for something.

I'm not a huge Eminem fan, but I LOVE Will Smith's music.
@Ebony-Rose Did you know that Jonney Cash was supposed to be in the plane that crashed with Buddy Holly, and the Big Bopper? Ritchie Valens took his place... lol sorry, I love Buddy Holly and spent weeks researching stuff on his life and the crash and all.

Before Valens got on the plance, he had told Cash that he 'hopes his trailor freezes up' and then Cash told Valens 'I hope your plane crashes', and that kinda haunted Cash until he died... sad :(
@angel-of-darkness I don't like her that much. It's not my style of music, but I also think that she just... tries to hard. Though I love what she stands for. I'm a big fan of Modanna though, and Lady G is almost trying to be her (like with the music video controversy and wordrobe thing). But I have respect for her.
@dancingshoes14 I love Never Shout Never. My friends Erin Cara and I all got wolf hats just like Christopher Drews. It was epic. lol
@SoggycityBob I LOVE KISS!!!!! I was so upset yesterday 'cuz my brothers got Coldplay (which I also love) and Kiss mixed up. I was like 'how can you get those two mixed up?'.
@MoonBean I TOTALLY agree with you... I hate that song. I personally don't see why people want to go out, party and get waisted and high, so they won't even remember what happened the next day. What's 'fun' about that? I would want to remember a fun time. But that's just me. lol
