I have four free-form surveys for everyone to check out and respond to if you're so inclined. I'm hoping the feedback I get from everyone here will help me out building a couple of new features, so please take the time to read through both of these and provide any suggestions/feedback/ideas you may have. Cheers!

The first survey, regarding multi-author stories, can be found here:
http://www.protagonize.com/group/protagonize/topic/355

The second survey, regarding completed stories, can be found here:
http://www.protagonize.com/group/protagonize/topic/356

The third survey, regarding moving poetry into its own section, can be found here:

Howdy folks.

This one should be pretty straightforward. I know there's been a lot of debate about it, so I'm going to use the new "like/dislike" option to let you guys vote on this one directly.

I'm of the opinion, personally, that "own votes" are stilting the hot stories and top rated authors quite a bit these days, especially with stories that span dozens of chapters by the same person. I'd like to see it be a little less easy to manipulate those rankings, but I figured I'd ask you guys to see what you thought about it first.

I'll take input here, and make a final decision myself based on the feedback. If you have a specific argument for or against it, please feel free to post it in the comments below.

Should we prevent people from rating their own work?

Uhm, okay, let me clarify so people don't confuse votes:

- Voting "for" the change (LIKE) = People should NOT be able to rate their own work
- Voting "against" the change (DISLIKE) = People should be able to rate their own work

So... a positive number would mean we go ahead and make the change and remove own votes. A negative total would mean you guys don't want me to make the change. Clear as mud? Good. ;)

I've updated the question and the post title to reflect this.

how come there were, what appeared to be, 3 votes... and then I voted, and now there's only 1? :$

To me, rating my own work is like calling myself a hero. It's not up for me to decide how good it is. Afterall I'm biased. Rating my work is like bragging about my children, and while I may be proud of certain peices (okay so I'm pretty proud of anything I post since I never post anything I'm not proud of) I'm not going to rate them. But that's just me. I'm here because I want to know the honest opinion of others about my work. Period.

@Rac7hel Mouse over the total number, it's additive. :)

And I think a few people voted before I clarified how the votes would work. Please read my 2nd post and make sure you voted the right way. ;)

Wow, neat!

But wait... still...

3....
minus 1....
equals...
1.

nevermind, I'll just assume you've got it under control ;)

+2 / -3 right now = -1 total. :)

Maybe you're seeing something cached, but that's what I see.

Gets a yes from me.
I would say no, the reason is simple.

As nick said in his intro, authors could indeed 'bump' their ratings and screw with the ratings system. This website is for peer-review, not I-review-my-own-work-and-screw-with-the-system-review.

Any questions?

@Spockeh

The question is 'Should we prevent people from rating their own work?''

If you don't think self-rating should be allowed, your answer should be 'yes', not 'no'. Is that what you meant?
Yes, sorry, I was trying to answer this, figure out what an annoying whine in my house was, then think clearly
yes from me btw.
me too haha. i dont rate any of my work, but theres always the minority.....
Well, I can confidently assure everyone in this group that neither myself nor anyone I have collaborated with have EVER, *EVER*, rated their own stories.*

Off with the self raters heads!

*less than 5
I don't rate my own stories. Never have, never will. It feels wrong, and cheap. It makes me feel dishonest. It's like "gaming the system."

However, I have no qualms about "liking" my own discussion post. (Nice new feature, Nick!)

Edit: Drat! You saw my headlights in the tunnel, didn't you? I can't "like" my own post. Well, I do like my own post, but I can't "like" it.

Edit of the Edit: I decided to "like" Tasha's post instead.
Rating your own work just doesn't make sense. I like the rating system as it provides a mostly unbiased guage about one's own work. I am hardly unbiased... so I shouldn't rate it. I think that goes for anybody, so...

@Faltarego I just was gonna say... :)

So far (of the limited votes we've gotten), folks seem pretty overwhelmingly in favour of preventing authors from rating their own work.

I'll leave this survey open for a little longer, but right now I'm definitely leaning in the direction of disabling (and removing existing) own-votes.
Oh geez. I haven't voted for myself in a good while now, but I sure used to. Watch me plummet right out of the top 50 ;)

Of course, I've been asking about removing votes for awhile now and saying I probably don't deserve my spot for even longer, so it's nothing I didn't see coming :P
