We want to know where you get down to business, where you hit the sheets. Is it usually a long and lengthy process for you with ample warm-up and cool-down, or do you just go at it full throttle without a second thought?

Oh, and I'm talking about writing, people. Durr. Writing, sketching, describing, working, Protagonizing, Procrastonizing... whatever you call it. Where does it happen? How do you go about it?

And finally, why not show us? Upload a picture of your favourite workspace and post it to this discussion! Doesn't matter if it's a desk, a couch, an attic, under a tree, or in a torch-lit lair. We writerly-people are a diverse bunch with diverse writing styles that spring from diverse writing habits. How many times can I use the word diverse? Let's not find out!

So, go at it!

...you know what I mean.

'aight, to break the ice a little i'll share first. this is where i Procrastonize:

Jack's Spaceimportant things to notice:
yes, i have two laptops. only one is hooked up to the interwebs, the smaller one i take to class and such. the big one is a dinosaur and doesn't recognize its own battery. g'job, Lappy 5000.

my desk is clean. this is rare. normally it will be covered in paper and notebooks and textbooks and pens and juice boxes and candy wrappers.

my wall is checker-boarded in photos. there are about 200 of them in my room. i less than three the Walmart 1-hour photo service.

those sticky notes? most of them have test/essay/midterm/presentation/academic dates on them. one of them has my health insurance number, just in case i injure myself while, erm, writing. yah.

those four stacks of paper pinned to the back of my desk? they're course syllabi. syllabuses? that one didn't get red-lined, so it must be right. anyways, they detail the 10 novels and 41 academic articles i have to read this semester. ugh.

i have a massively giant book that cost me $120, called "the Norton Anthology of English Literature." i hated that lit class so much.

that is, in fact, a plastic pirate sword you see behind my printer. why? i'm not sure either.

that is all i have to say. thanks for stoppin' by!

That's a scary clean looking desk. I just cleaned mine when I moved and it's still worse than that.

Nice shot of the laptop screen, though. :)

Edit: I'm a tease, I know.

@Jack Nice little spot you've got there. At first glance I thought those were tiles on your walls--then I realized they are photos. haha.

Ahh, a little computer to bring to class, wouldn't that be a dream. Currently I've got a big laptop with a dead battery (it was faulty--I didn't kill it.)

@nick I'm so glad to see that you're sweet dog has taken over your work. It's good to see you've got your priorities straight. Dogs first, work after.

You've got a very spiffy workspace, though, and a crackin-good view! (Whether or not views can crack can be a discussion for some other time.)

I want a desk, and a proper mouse. Now you all have got me jealous. I'm hoping this summer, when we move (again) that I'll be able to set up a nice little desk workspace in our new house. Preferably with a view and no other distractions. ( :

I don't currently have a regular workspace. I tend to tote my computer back and forth from home, (yes, even without a battery). Right now, I've been spending hours with it on this couch in the art building. Hmm... let me go take a picture of it.

Yeah, I know, lame. ( :

Excuse the terrible quality of my camera phone, please.
My ergonomic keyboard/Never leaves me bored
Pretty simple. Really I only need the ergo keyboard (normal ones and -shudder- laptop ones are waaaaay too cramped) and screen, but there's no other place for the phone or movies. I'd rather not have a phone in my room at all (I think the things are nuisances), but I don't like running upstairs when I need to get it. So I keep that old bugger in here, because unlike all the new phones in the house, it has a silent mode. Hearing the phone ring all the way upstairs is much less jarring and I can still place calls from here. Win-win!

@aryst0krat Good idea with the keyboard, Ary. Looks like you've got a cozy little spot.

@GoldenLilac My desk window faces Burnaby (Metrotown area), but our bedroom and balcony face Vancouver - pretty close, though. :)

@FogCat I blame all of the bugs on the on the dog drool in my keyboard. That hairball is always trying to login to Dogster.com...

I'm exceedingly jealous of all y'all with clean desks... mine, even when cleaned, manages to look like some entity of the chaos before creation.

I don't have any pictures of my desk handy, with my now-aging computer and external hard drive crouching in the center; my thesaurus, dictionary, and rhyming dictionary stacked ever-ready whenever a random-word-lookup urge strikes me; and of course all the pens, pencils, and random scraps of paper that manage to clutter everything, along with the desk lamp stretching over everything.

I mostly write there, but I also keep a little notebook in my pocket (I don't know if I've mentioned yet, but I love my pockets and take full advantage of them). I've discovered that if typing something up doesn't generate inspiration, scribbling it down on paper usually does. My current notebook is just about perfect for pocket-writing: a 3x4in spiral-bound I found in Salamanca with Picasso's "Don Quixote" on the cover. Again, I unfortunately don't have pictures handy.

This is such a neat, Jack. I'm likin' this topic idea. In fact, it's making me think of another potentially-interesting topic idea...

Desky
This is my little bubble, if you will. It's a music studio, a writing space, entertainment, work, pretty much everything goes here. Including the millions of plastic bottles that never reach the bin.

I have two computers. One that works better than the other one. As in, the big clunky dinosaur computer on the floor can run a high-spec game no problems and the shiny new laptop can't run solitaire without crashing.

I know it might seem a bit pointless having a laptop if I'm going to hook it up to the bigger screen, but it's saved me from developing a hunchback. Most days the laptop comes to school with me as well.

Ignore the guitar. that shouldn't be there. Also ignore the dust. I didn't realise it was that gross... *has a cleaning fit*

The little rabbit toy you can see just behind my laptop is not mine. It's my little cousin's, but it got left here when her mum moved back to New Zealand.

And finally, yes. I know I don't have a proper desk. I ended up with a 60's writing cabinet that cost a fiver instead. Thanks, mum....

hurrah for sharing and pictures and everything! thanks so far, everyone!

as a comment on the almost disturbing cleanliness of my desk, it is almost never that clean. well, it is right now, but... anyways. it's only because it's reading week right now, so i'm not running back and forth between classes, throwing things about my room as i come and go. that's usually the case. as it is, the stack of [excuse me while i peer behind my desk to my bed] six novels and a theory textbook have relocated momentarily to somewhere other than this desk. namely my window sill. heh.

@FogCat, oh, i remember the days of lugging Lappy 5000 to class every day, complete with power brick. guh. thank gawd i have Netty 900 now: smaller better faster... stronger? dunno about that last one.

@aryst0krat, that phone looks absolutely ancient. especially beside the shininess of your computer. it even has one of those annoying slinky cords!

@nickb, you've got those two monitors linked, don't you? i should do that with my net+notebooks sometime. just for kicks.

Heh. My work space is, well, I have a few of them actually, but none I'm going to share a photo of. Maybe when I reclaim my little work center I can post something (which is also my sewing center). So where do I write, scribble and notate, well...

There's my Work Computer - it's fun to write or Protagonize at Lunch or when I just need a break from work. Since it's my own little 6x6 foot space my desk here is neat and clean.

Then there's my Gaming Desktop - well it used to be good for gaming (like World of Warcraft) back when my hubby purchased it. Now I have to wait till the kids are asleep to use it, since I share it with my daughter. At four she's likes her Preschool games. And even if the kids are asleep, I hope my hubby isn't watching TV or surfing U-Tube, because, well I'm easily distracted.

THEN there's My Netbook - a wonderful Christmas gift from a wonderful hubby that allows me to electronically write anywhere. Unfortunately our wireless router is a little flighty so I can't always do Protagonizing, or IM when using it. But I can take it to our sun filled bedroom in the afternoons at naptime and write.

Finally we come to my Notebooks - I still like to write with pen and paper and sometimes I find it's the best portable way to do it. I don't have to worry about spelling, grammar or anything other than just getting my thoughts on paper. It's been great to take to the picnic tables hidden along the tree covered paths behind my work. I do my best thinking outside.

Unfortunately with so many computers to use, I carry around a USB drive (she looks like a large Lego person; you decapitate her to plug her in, disturbing eh? But hey it was free swag from my boss). So my top projects get carted around on this little portable devise, but I've found it's not ideal; I nearly lost one of my edited stories when a folder became corrupted. Thank goodness it had already been posted, so I was able to recover the whole thing.

I really look forward to the day when I have my own space for my stuff. Hopefully when my mom comes down to do a birthday project for me, I can get organized, just a little bit more. I like being organized. I function better that way.

Organized? I live in a state of constant chaos... and that's pretty cool with me. ( :
