2010 Summer Poetry Tournament

Hello everyone. Welcome to the official discussion thread for the 2010 Summer Poetry Tournament. It is being run by ElzuWolfe and myself. It will be anonymous, and rated by a point system. This is how Elzu explained them both to me:

"Basically each round, the poets write their assignment and email Elzu their poems, at poetrytournament@live.com . He assigns them a number, so they can follow their own progress.
We then post each poem up under the numbers and give each judge a set of numbers to judge. The point of an anonymous tournament is that the judges don't know who they are judging, so it's objective.

The first three rounds will have everyone in. The final two will eliminate. All points will gather throughout the tournament - so let's say we have five rounds and each poem is marked out of 60 points, the total points the poet could potentially receive by the end is 300. So the people in the top half of the competition are safe. The people at the bottom of the third round onwards, will be eliminated. This continues to round five where the three leaders face off for the last time, and fight it out for first, second and third."

We'll reopen the poet's vote and each round will receive a winner - if they were supposed to go out, a poet's choice can redeem them, with reduced points or if they were going through anyway, they could have a bonus five points.

We've got the time line set, and we really want to stick to it, so that it won't run on too long for those competitors who are going back to school.

Official start date: August 22nd - Official end date: September 22nd. = 4 weeks.

Sign up date for poets: August 8th. - This is when the official thread for sign ups will go up, but if you're sure you want to compete before then, just pop your name in on this thread. All pre sign up poets will be listed on the official sign up page.

Sign up date for judges: Now until start date on August 22nd. The judge's sign up page is up at: http://www.protagonize.com/group/poetry-workshop/topic/1932

We'll be going with 12:00 noon, Pacific Standard Time, (PST), because that seems to be the standard for Protag.

Round 1: Noon August 22- noon August 24 - two days for poets.
Noon August 24 - noon August 26 - two days for judges

Round 2: Noon August 26 - noon August 29 - three days for poets
Noon August 29 - noon August 31 - two days for judges

Round 3: Noon August 31 - noon September 4 - four days for poets
Noon September 4 - noon September 7 - three days for judges

Round four begins the elimination rounds, so we're cooking up something a bit harder

Round 4: Noon September 7 - noon September 11 - four days for poets
Noon September 11 - noon September 14 - three days for judges

Round 5: Noon September 14 - noon September 19 - five days for poets
Noon September 19 - noon September 22 - three days for judges.

September 22nd ends the main Tournament. The three poems with the most points out of 300 will have a face off match.

Noon September 22 - noon September 25 three days for poets
Noon September 25, or sooner for the judges, if the 3 poems are all posted earlier. the results shouldn't take more than 2 days.

First, Second, and third place winners, will be announced by midnight, September 27.

Elzu came up with a format for the rounds, for easier posting of the poems. This is it:

Summer Poetry Tournament 2010 :

Pre-elimination rounds - challenges 1 & 2
Elimination rounds - begins with challenge # 3
Quarter Finals - challenge# 4)
Semi - Finals - challenge # 5
Final challenge - the remaining 3 top poets will battle it out for first, second, and third place.

We hope this tournament piques your interest, and most of all, we hope everyone HAS FUN!!

Elzu has put up the tournament format, without details. All that will come with the start date of August 22nd. You can find the sample tournament page here: http://www.protagonize.com/poem/the-summer-poetry-tournament-2010

:D

I'm in :D

Although sign ups haven't started yet :(
@Amberactuallyritu

yay! Thank you, Ritu. Which capacity did you want to enter under? Poet, or judge? We'll keep track of the poets who want to sign up immediately. If A lot of people want to sign up now, we'll make a decision on putting it up earlier. I'm working on the judging page now.

Question: Round Four, shouldn't the judging start at noon on the 11th, not the 12th? I'm making out my calender right now and I just noticed that.
I really want in... hopefully the fact that I'm starting school five days after the start date. Hopefully it can work, as I missed out on the spring tourney.

@Archi_Teuthis - Well noticed, Archi, it's been corrected.

@g2 - it'd be good to see you get involved :)
Yay! I know you two are going to run an amazing tournament :) I'm definitely in. As a poet, that is. Just let me know when the official signups start. :)

Cheers,
-Will
I'd love to be a poet in the competition; I've been waiting for one of these to come around :)
This will be my first poetry competition, I'm most definitely in! ( poet )
@Archi.
Nice catch. I set back all the other days after that to correct it. The official end of the Tournament is back to Sept. 22, and the final for the 3 winners is the 26th.

Question - Do you submit a poem for each round or just one that'll go through the entire thing? Also, are contestants being given topics and do you look for rhyme and/or free verse?
Group Manager
@deathephoenix - a different poem for each round - for example, every entrant will submit at least three poems. If you are in the bottom half of the leader board after the third round you will be out.
Each challenge will be different, we haven't finalised our ideas on challenges yet, but they won't be revealled until the round themselves. So wether something is in free verse or formatted yet remains to be seen.
But I hope that isn't a deciding factor on your entrance, we hope that the challenge of doing something you're not used to is not only fun but an opportunity to learn how to do something new.
@ ElzuWolfe

That's hardly a deterrent. What worries me the most is my time schedule. I'm looking at a packed schedule for the next year starting this monday. So, I don't want to sign up but then not have the time to log in and write a poem.
Group Manager
Obviously I cant really convince you to join in, it is dependent on your time schedule and we'd love for you to join in, but I won't lie, this tournament will require some of your time and punctuality. It's going to be a quick turn over, my personal focus on this tournament is to see how much you can say in a few words. But as I said, moonwalked are still discussing challenges.
Eugh fine!
I'm in :)
Hm, I've got till the 8th to consider it right? :) Lets see how I settle into my new schedule that starts monday. If I think I can handle it, I'd love to take part. I've noticed these before but never really did take part. It'd be nice to give it a shot.
Group Manager
You have until the 20th. Official signups don't start until the 8th. Yeah, give it some thought. :-)
sign me up as a poet!
sign me up please!!!! I will be far far away from an internet connection on the 8th, so please please please add my name to the list now!
Many many thanks to everyone who has decided to compete in this tournament. I can only speak for myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if Elzu was equally as thrilled at the interest you've shown.

If you know of anyone else who shares in your interest in poetry, please send them this way. They are as welcome as you are. The more, the merrier. Also, if any of you know of someone who is interested in judging, then the judge sign up page is up and running.

I'm so excited about this tournament. I can't wait till we get started!!
