Welcome to the Flash Fiction group! I hope you will consider joining us. Please note that this group is open to all writers, even if you have never tried writing flash fiction before.

Just to give a quick introduction, my name is Ana Cristina and I've been a member of Protagonize since December 2008. I am an English teacher to high school students and I enjoy writing poetry and short prose pieces in my spare time. I first learned about flash fiction on the now defunct writing community, Ficlets.com. It was love at first write for me, and I've been writing primarily flash fiction ever since. I look forward to seeing where this workshop will go.

Here's a quick rundown of what you can expect to see as a member of this group:

- discussions on the technical aspects of writing flash fiction
- writing assignments to help hone your skills
- monthly writing contests (100% friendly, natch)
- regular intelligent critique of established flash fiction pieces
- regular constructive criticism on our own pieces

What else would you like to see included in this workshop? Let me know in the comments! In addition, feel free to go ahead and give a brief introduction of yourself so we can get to know you a little better. :)

AC, what's the difference between "flash fiction" and "vignettes"? Curious.

Ooo! New group!

Good idea, Ana :)

@smac972 Flash fiction pieces differ from vignettes in that they contain all the principal story elements: a protagonist, conflict, and resolution, whereas a vignette may be missing one or more of these elements and ultimately leaves more unwritten. A vignette is also sometimes referred to as "snapshot literature." It gives the reader a brief impression of something without filling in the blanks the way a flash fiction piece would.

Great question, smac! :) I hope I answered it for you.

@Tasha_Noble Thanks! :)
lol...then flash fiction is new to me! (I love writing vignettes, being I'm lazy)

Are there any places you can point me to to find some half decent flash fiction?

@smac972 This is an okay site for examples: http://www.onlineflashfiction.com/
Ficlets.com has recently been reincarnated into Ficly.com, which are stories of 1,024 characters in length.

I've got a book that has great examples, but unfortunately it is in my classroom at school ... and I'm on summer vacation ... D'oh! But as soon as I remember the title, I will let you know. :)

I'm in the middle, quite literally, of doing 5 flash fiction pieces in return for charity donations. 1,000 words a piece. I'm just doing up the outline for the third one now. I was mostly doing it as an appreciative token but honestly I thought it would be good practice for me too.

Turns out? I quite like the challenge.

This group makes me excited :)
I'm interested in anything that will help me be more precise about anything. I tend to ramble. 1000 words seems to be a lot for flash fiction. I'd like to learn more.

I thought 1,000 was on the high side for Flash Fiction, too, but I suppose it's quite a broad category, No doubt you'll be issuing challenges for shorter pieces, too. I've entered a few competitions with 200, 250, 500 words, and seen a few so-called 'One Page Fiction' contests of around 300 words. It's tough!

@Tasha_Noble I tend to write much shorter pieces than 1,000 words. I'm more in the 200-500 word category, so yeah, I will include challenges for shorter pieces as well. One-page fiction is tough as nails to do, but it can make for some interesting stories. :)

Eh, I think I looked up flash fiction and found a definition that said 1,000 words was the top end. Regardless, telling a story in even that many words is quite a challenge. I look forward to the 500 and lower challenges :)

This group sounds really fun. I love writing concisely, but that usually takes me into poetry, not flash fiction. I'm up for the challenge though!
Thank you both Ana and Smac for pointing me in this direction. I couldn't think of a better format to help me develop my writing skills in areas I'm needing to work on - structure, description and rambleness, yes, I did just make that word up. :)

I'm looking forward to the challenges :)

@ABStarns rambleness is a fine and decent word. I'm looking forward to the challenges, too! :)
are the competitions going to be held on topic forums such as these first? because no-one can post a story on a group yet...
I'm upset that I didn't peek at this group earlier! This sounds like a great idea, really exciting! :D

I've really only done a few "short short" stories, but they were a fun challenge. I can't wait to try them again!

@Ratius I'm waiting for the stories tab to go live before I announce any competitions. Groups are releasing content based on a phased approach. To learn more about that go here: http://blog.protagonize.com/2009/04/20/a-preview-and-a-retrospective

In the meantime, you're more than welcome to contribute a flash fiction piece in my Writing Exercise discussion post: http://blog.protagonize.com/2009/04/20/a-preview-and-a-retrospective
Wait for it.... wait for it.... ??? :s ??? When does the gate open? lol...

I am so excited, so far we have some pretty talented writers grouped here and I just can not wait to read their creations and throw own hand in the pot. Exciting!!!
Heya;

The Groups brought me back for a look around... Think I might get to writing a bit again...
