She was lying, I could hear it in her voice and see it in her eyes. I didn’t like it. I know it’s maybe on the hypocritical side but I wanted her to trust me. I wanted for her to be able to tell me the truth, not just feed me some weak lies.
“I can’t help you if you don’t tell me the truth,” I told her as gently as I could. There was hardly any point upsetting her, right?
“I’m fine, it’s nothing,” she said.
A defeated sigh left me. I didn’t know how to get her to open up, and even if she did, what was I supposed to do then? “Fine,” I shrugged it off.
"Why don't we have a look out back?" she asked, trying to change the topic and distract me. I just went along with it, what else could I do?
“Yeah,” I grunted, getting up and heading off outside without waiting for her. She followed me closely enough. The garden wasn’t exactly big, but it was big enough to need a shed to keep tools in. Tools that could be used as weapons. It could also be crammed full of walkers, but it was a risk I was willing to take. Sophia tried the door, but the lock on it wouldn’t budge. I went back round to the front, grabbed the crowbar from the car and forced the lock off in one easy movement.
I tensed, preparing myself for walkers to come at us, teeth snapping, angry with hunger. Instead the best scent I’ve smelled in months washed over us. Weed. The plants were growing quite happily on the work surface at the back. There were heat lamps attached to a generator that was still working, and a fucking sprinkler system on a timer hanging just above them. Whoever had lived here was serious about growing their own weed.
“You have got to be kidding me,” Sophia said when she took in the sights and smells the shed had to offer us.
“Oh, you beauty,” I grinned, walking over to it.
Sophia laughed behind me, “nice.”
"I think we deserve some after everything we've had to put up with, don't you?" I asked, picking the buds from the healthiest looking plant.
"Sounds like a plan. Now you get to show off your skills," she grinned at me.
I let out a laugh. "My skills, eh?"
"Well you're the one who knows all about this kinda thing. I only ever smoked it, not prepared it,” she said, watching me.
"Not much to it. If money was still relevant, we'd have stumbled into a goldmine just now," I said with another laugh, picking as many buds as I could find, putting them in the little bags I found on the side. "Some for the road"
She smiled at me, leaning on the doorframe, "wanna have some time out tonight then? I think I saw a drinks cupboard in the front room."
“That sounds like an excellent plan."
She grinned, "I'll go see what I can find.” I watched her walk back to the house. I hoped once she was stoned she might be a bit happier. I didn’t want her to be sad. I followed her in when I was done, propping the door shut, just in case. Walkers ruining a perfectly good weed farm would just be sacrilege. Sophia appeared in the hallway holding a bottle of JD in one hand, and a bottle of vodka in the other.
"Who's joining us?" I asked.
"No one, why?"
"Just curious,” I smiled. "More for us."
She grinned at me, "why you think I wouldn't be able to handle it?"
"I never said that,” I told her with a wink.
"Well then,” she started heading upstairs, "lets party.” I wasn’t going to argue with that. Quickly bolting the front door, I followed her up. She put the bottles down on the floor by the bed, lighting a couple of candles that were dotted around the room. She pulled the curtains across, darkening the room. I’d never really done anything like this before. I mean, I’d smoked weed and had a few drinks alone with a girl plenty of times, but this was somehow different. Closing the curtains, having candles. Maybe it was because we somehow had ended up caring about each other.
I tried to shake the thought from my head and found papers and card for roaches under the bed in a little box with a grinder in it. The weed was too fresh to grind so I chucked that back in the box and started pulling it apart instead.
Sophia was pulling off her jumper and jeans, leaving herself in only her vest top and panties. I tried not to look too much, given what Scott had done to her so recently. "I remember when me and a load of my friends had a weed party,” a smirk lifted her lips, "that was an interesting night."
"In what way?"
She grinned at me, "wouldn't you like to know," she winked.
"I would,” I chuckled. "Tell me."
She thought back; "let’s just say it made me wonder if I was bi and I woke wearing nothing with AJ's head in my lap." I laughed, trying to hide the effect that image was having on me. If she noticed, she didn’t say anything.
"Have you fucked many girls?"
She shrugged, “that I remember? Or just what I can guess from a wild night?" she flashed me another grin. "Scott never knew about any of it."
“Well aren’t you a wild one?”
She let out a laugh, “I had my moments.” Her hand wrapped around the bottle of JD and she twisted off the cap a little too forcefully, taking a big ol’ gulp of it straight from the bottle. I finished rolling, then, and handed her one joint, lighting up my own. She put the bottle back on the floor and shuffled up to make room for me on the bed. I watched as she sparked up, pulling the smoke into her lungs before closing her eyes and leaning against the wall.
Fuck did I want her right then.
