I could think of plenty of ways she could repay me, and none of them innocent. But for once, my mind was elsewhere - mostly on getting a proper sleep for once. The worry of Sophia turning was gone now, since if she was going to, she would have by now. It was one thing off my mind, at least. The only concern I had was the ones hanging around outside. They know we're in here, I'm sure of it. There isn't a way in, though, I made certain of that.
Even as I followed her up the stairs to a sort of living room with a couple of sofas and staff lockers. There weren't any blankets or cushions, just the throws on the sofas, but it beat sleeping on the floor. Sophia seemed kinda shy as I stripped down to my boxers and flopped on one of the sofas but being in a state of undress had hardly bothered me before and it definitely wasn't going to get under my skin now.
"Wake me up when they die out," I grunted, pulling the throw over myself and closing my eyes. After that, there could've been a second apocalypse and I wouldn't have known a thing about it.
It was mid afternoon before I woke up. I hadn't slept that well in years. At some point in the night, I'd ended up on the floor, sprawled out in the space between the two sofas with the throw tangled around my ankles.
Sophia looked like she'd already been up a few hours. I half grunted a greeting in her direction and stumbled off in search of a toilet. Have I ever mentioned I don't do waking up? Waking up is worse than the zombies.
Once I'd had a piss, I shuffled down into the shop; shops had stuff, right? Like a toothbrush and toothpaste? I couldn't remember the last time I'd even had the time to hang around and brush my teeth. I just sort of rubbed them with a shirt til they didn't feel so gross anymore, usually.
Half the shelving units had been tipped over; the floor was covered in a mix of burst tubes and packets of stuff, but in amongst the mess was exactly what I was looking for. "Fuckin' jackpot," I grinned to myself, grabbing them. Sophia glanced at me curiously as I walked back in the direction of the small bathroom, and I flashed her a glimpse of what I'd got before disappearing with them to revel in the minty goodness.
