Day 3.Mature

Prompt – Pick up the book closest to you. Turn to page 49. Use the first sentence at the top of the page as a writing prompt.

Book: Bioshock: Rapture by John Shirley

Published by Titan Books.

Page 49 sentence: She went on in that vein for a while, losing the Ryan thread.

I just want to say I haven’t read this book yet; it’s in my pile of books that I need to read, so I have no idea of the context of this sentence to those whom have read the book.

(Page Break)

Ryan watched, disinterested as the woman in front of him continued to speak. He wasn’t listening, why should he, there was nothing he wanted to hear that would make him stay. He stood, finishing his drink and left her to continue her mindless babbling. Leaving the bar he stepped out into the chilly night air, he felt the alcohol he had consumed thus far make his head swim.

Stepping onto the sidewalk he hunched his shoulders and ducked his head down and walked into the wind, cars rushed past the sounds of their engines the only companion to the sound of his footsteps. He glanced up and dodged a street lamp before turning into a side street that would lead him to his flat, he sped up when he heard the racket his neighbours were making. It didn’t do well to dwell on the streets when they kicked off.

His flat, when he finally got there, was warm and he automatically hung up his coat and headed towards the open fireplace. The embers were slowly dying but he managed to coax them back to life with a few pokes with the poker before adding a few bits of kindling. Ryan reached out his hands, warming them before he headed to his small kitchen; he needed to clear his head before he got a headache from the shouting outside his window.

The End
