Work seemed to drag horribly slow – every hour ticked by at a snail’s pace and I was relieved when 5 rolled around and I was able to leave. Instead of going straight home however I stuck my head around the door of the café and Keri waved me inside.
Keri and Kyle the newbie, whose name I knew only because I’d read his badge at lunchtime, were just clearing up when I arrived, putting the chairs on the tables and sweeping the floor. I collapsed onto a sofa in the corner and sighed exasperatedly.
“You just can’t keep away can you?” the boy Kyle joked flashing me a smile which I returned.
He was quite a looker this one, she had short dark hair and bright emerald green eyes which seemed to shine through the darkness of the café. He’s either taken or gay was my best guess, all the good looking ones are however I secretly hoped he wasn’t because I wouldn’t have minded going out with him.
I shook the thought away; I wasn’t ready for another relationship, not after Danny. Not yet anyway.
“So what’s your name?” Kyle asked, perching on the arm of the sofa. “Saoirse” I said smiling up at him.
“Nice to meet you” he said holding his hand out to me to shake.
“Kyle, I am not paying you to chat … I am paying you to work!” Keri called across the café”
He gave me a sheepish look before scuttling off to carry on working. I sat there for a few minutes watching the world pass me by then I felt a soft ‘flump’ next to me, Keri had joined me on the sofa.
“Are we going for a drink tonight” she asked, staring unblinkingly at me.
“Yeah, god I think I need a drink after the day I have had” I said giving another exasperated sigh.
“Yeah I think I do too” she said flitting her eyes momentarily over to Kyle who was busy sweeping the floor.
“Aww, don’t be too hard on him” I said with a giggle.
“I’ll try” she said sinking into her seat, “Ahh it’s the first time I have sat down all day!”
“You could help y’know” Kyle muttered, properly hoping that Keri wouldn’t hear but unluckily for him she did.
“I’m the boss not you!” she retorted lazily, “Get back to work, the sooner you finish the sooner we can all go have a drink!”
He muttered something under his breath before getting back to work.
“You can come for a drink with us if you want?” I called, receiving daggers from Keri for suggesting it but I really didn’t care – I thought he was nice and I wanted to get to know him better.
