Thomas Bird

"Would you like to sit down?" I nodded my head at the part of the bench by Eliza.

"Yes, come sit with us!"Eliza smiled encouragingly.

"No thank you, I'd like to look out at the sea." She smiled then turned her gaze to the open ocean. Suddenly Eli looked up at me and asked,

"How long have I been up with you?" Looking at my watch, I answered,

"Fifteen minutes, why?"

"Oh! My mom might get worried!" I boosted her off my lap and then she scurried off to find her mom. Eliza sighed and put her head on my shoulder with her eyes closed.

"What are you thinking about?" I put my arm around her.

"What our new life will be like. Where are we going to settle?"

"Virginia sounds ok."

"Mm, I think I prefer Utah." She lifted her head and watched as a 21 year old young man came up the stairs and looked around. She scooted closer, as though to show she wasn't interested or available.

"Utah would be nice. Where in Utah?" I continued.

"Salt Lake?" She asked and looked at me.

"Ok then! We'll hop on the train and go straight there!" She laughed quietly.

"Will we marry before or after we build a settlement?"

"Oh, I think after. That way, there'll be a door to carry you through." She laughed and shook her head. When we looked over, the 21 year old man was looking, dumbfounded, like a zombie, at Jacqueline. "Did you know that's what I did when I first saw you?" Eliza grinned at me then lightly slapped my arm.
