“We need the key for your apartment” I said bluntly.
“For what?” she asked.
“We don’t have time to explain, we just need the key”
“Not until you say what for” she frowned.
“Kat, there are lives at stake” I said, seeing the worry spreading across Rae and Riley’s faces.
“Just blurt it out, then”
“You want Maria’s death on your hands, keep talking” I shouted.
“What? Why the fuck is she in my apartment?” she asked, heading out of Riley’s clinic.
“Is that really the first thing you think of?” I asked incredulously. I’d just told her Maria’s life was at stake, and Kat was more concerned about Maria invading her privacy.
She didn’t say anything to that, or if she did, I wasn’t paying attention. She tried the lock, but it wouldn’t budge. I gave it a go myself, but nothing was going to make that lock turn. I knelt down, peering into the lock as best I could. Grovesnor had jammed something in the lock, and I could make out some kind of barricade against the door. It took me, Scott and Sekani to break the door down and get past the barricade. I caught sight of Maria, tied to a chair and barely conscious, before I heard the trademark whine of a power drill. Next thing I knew, there was a drill bit a few centimetres from my head. I ducked out of the way, and saw Kat head over to Maria. Grovesnor kept lunging at me with his power drill, and I couldn’t help but noticed the chunks of flesh and bone stuck to the end.
Sekani and Scott had backed out of the room, and Grovesnor seemingly hadn’t noticed them. I dodged Grovesnor’s drill again, and Scott barged into him, knocking him off balance long enough for me to get the drill out of his hands. Scott stumbled back as Grovesnor’s meaty fist collided with his temple , and I cracked the butt of the drill against Grovesnor’s skull, seeing his eyes roll back as he slumped to the ground.
“Keep an eye on him” I told Sekani, as I made my over to Kat and Maria. “Is she okay?”
“No, we need Riley. Now” Kat said.
I yelled for Scott to fetch Riley, looking at Maria. Kat had untied her, and laid her down on the couch. I could see just from glancing at her that her left leg was covered with blood, though where on her leg it had come from, I couldn’t tell. The two of us stayed with her while we waited for Riley, who checked her over quickly before sending us out of the apartment.
Sekani and Scott dragged the unconscious Grovesnor out of the apartment, taking the rope he’d used to tie Maria up with and told me they’d tie him up somewhere and keep an eye on him til he woke up. I nodded, leaning against the corridor wall and glanced at Kat. What Pet had told me flickered through my mind, but I tried to ignore it. There were more important things to worry about at present.
“What are you going to do to all of them?” Kat asked me after a while.
“The only thing we can do”
“You mean kill them?” she questioned, and I nodded. “I don’t feel anything, just… numb”
“Kat, Pet told me about… Y’know”
“About you being pregnant”
“How did she know?” she asked, her hand covering her mouth in shock.
“How should I know?”
“You shouldn’t know anything. Neither should she”
“Well I do”
“It’s not your problem” she said bluntly.
“Isn’t it?” I failed to see how it wasn’t. It was my kid, after all.
“Why would it be?”
“It’s mine, right? And we all have to live together”
“Yes… it is yours, but you’re with Rae. She’s my friend. I know if she found out about it, she’d be heartbroken. She really likes you”
I let out a sigh. To all intents and purposes, I wasn’t “with” Rae yet. We were still toying with the idea; she’d turned eighteen by now, but everything with Natch and the others had kind of put us on the back burner. We’d shared a bed a few times since, but nothing serious had happened.
Kat looked at me. “You know, but keep it to yourself. I was gonna lie before, say that it was Rainer’s, and I still think that would be best, even if he is a bastard”
“It’s up to you, Kat” I said simply.
She looked down at her feet. “I just don’t want to hurt Rae by her finding out we slept together. Those things matter to a girl”
“Like I said, it’s up to you”
“Aren’t you worried about hurting Rae?”
“Not really. She’s been pretty understanding of everything, so far”
We’d sat up one night on the balcony, and shared a beer like the time before. We’d talked about our lives before all this. She was a high school Senior, and had a string of bad relationships behind her. “I have really shitty taste in men” she’d laughed, her head on my shoulder as she told me about her last boyfriend. He was a college Freshman, and was from out of state. Texas, I think she said. Anyway, he treated her more like an object than a person, and she’d been trying to come up with a way to dump him for months. She was on her way to do it when all this broke out. I guess that was how she managed to stay so cheerful.
“You so don’t know girls” Kat sighed and I shrugged. “I best get back to Pet” she said, leaving without another word.
Hours passed before Riley was finally done, and I was allowed to check on Maria. I found out from Rae, who’d been helping Riley, that Grovesnor had drilled through the nerves in Maria’s knee, and from what Riley could tell, it had lost all feeling. He’d had no choice. Maria was unconscious, a few sparse bandages wrapped around her knee, now a bloodied, stitched up stump. I sat with her for a while, my apologies falling on deaf ears, before getting to my feet, determined to make Grovesnor suffer for what he did.
