Conn was genuinely surprised when he heard Adriana's revealation. She looked a little hesitant as she told him but covered it up with a small smile, looking back onto the road ahead of them.
This was the first time he'd ever considered it. An Unnacceptable with ambitions? It wasn't a crime but it still came as a shock. They lead lives that won't give them any satisfaction so it was only reasonable for them to wish for a better future. Yet, no Unacceptable had ever been comfortable enough to tell him that.
Before I was chosen...
Of course, that made perfectly logical sense.
Giving her a sly sideways glance, Conn scrutinized Adriana. No wonder he'd thought her to be normal when they'd first met. There was this radiance that emanated from her. Not only was she beautiful on the outside but so far, she'd been the perfect escort for Conn.
A part of him longed for him to be friends with her but it was clearly stated in the rules of this world that no such thing were to occur. It would be a blasphemy of the deepest one.
And Conn had to follow the rules whether he liked it or not.
Clearing his throat to get her attention, he asked, "So where now?"
Adriana looked surprised, giving him a small smile as she said, "Back to the inn of course."
Slapping himself internally at the obvious answer, Conn grinned back but he could feel the energy eating away at him. Why had he fallen unconscious there? It shouldn't have happened...
Being a Director, he was one of the most powerful when it came to the magic he possessed. Yet, that only contradicted the point.
When was the last time he'd had a magic pill?
Conn thought back, trying to refresh his memory. It took him a while but then he remembered. The night before he left from Eskhalar, he'd taken one. No wonder. It's been almost four days since he'd consumed any.
Sighing, he closed his eyes slightly as a wave of exhaustion came over him. He wanted to go home.
