Okay, so baking cakes with an oversized five year old is not exactly what I had in mind when I agreed to come over here. In a weird kind of way, I kinda enjoyed playing big brother/dad. I'd not exactly had much chance to experience what it was like to have a dad or a brother, but Rayn seemed to enjoy himself. Once we'd put the cake in the oven and cleaned the kitchen (which looked like a flour bomb had hit it) we settled Rayn down with a Disney film to keep Rayn entertained.
"Y'all did a real nice thing today." Aria smiled at me, laying her head on my chest.
"It was kinda fun." I shrugged it off, giving her a smile as I wrapped my arms around her, feeling a little possessive.
We sat in a comfortable silence for a while. Aria and I were only half watching the movie, more intent on making eyes at each other, but aware of Rayn on the chair next to us.
Once the cake was done, we got him a slice and left him in the living room with it, taking a few minutes alone in the kitchen.
"I don't know how you can be so patient with him." I said to Aria "He's like a small child"
She shrugged. "He asked me to be his momma so thats what I'm doing."
I leaned in a little closer, "That's pretty amazing. Not a lot of people would do that."
"Do what exactly?"
Cursing mentally, I turned to face the owner of the acidic tone. I registered dark blonde hair and unnaturally blue eyes before Aria started scolding him.
"Emrys! Where are ya manners? And another thing, what did y'all say to Rayn? He's been here all day waitin' for ya to apologise or somethin' 'cause he's convinced y'all don't like him!"
The guy, Emrys, sighed and waited until she was done before he let his lip curl.
"He's a druggie Aria. I'm not going to have anything to do with scum like that."
"Woah, hold it a second there." I interjected. "Now I don't know anything that's gone on here, but Rayn seems a pretty decent kid. Definitely not what I'd call scum. So I think you're being a bit harsh there dude. I'd suggest giving him a second chance."
Emrys raked me with the most arrogant and scornful look that I'd ever seen on a person before replying. "And I'd advise for you to butt the hell out of stuff thats none of your fucking business."
I raised an eyebrow at that. "Excuse me?"
Emrys merely scoffed while Aria flared up at him again, going on another rant.
Rayn shuffled in a few moments later, all wide eyes on the verge of tears.
"Please can everyone stop fighting?"
I watched Aria go over to him, folding him in a hug. "'Course hon. Don't you worry."
Emrys looked like a dog had messed on his new shoes or something when he caught sight of Rayn. I gave the kid a smile and turned to Emrys.
"Well, don't you have something to say?"
As if he was deliberately being an asshole, he turned his back on all of us, flipped me off and walked out the back door, the way he'd come in.
"C'mon kid." I said as Rayn's face dropped dangerously close to tears. "I'm sure there's a Disney movie somewhere you haven't seen."
I steered him out of the kitchen with Aria, earning myself a beauty of a smile from her. Damn, she made me feel almost human when she did that and less like the freak of nature that my parents kicked out of their house. I helped Rayn settle down and find a film, not really looking at Aria, uncertain of what to do next.
