I first got the idea for the name when I read Unwind by Neil Gaiman. In the book, there is a boy who is african-american but all of the names of the races had been changed. An artist decided that african-americans were more of an umber than a black and the new ethnicity stuck. I really liked the idea of it and so I decided to take it on as a name. Every time I write about my people, I avoid the use of the term blacks. Black is associated with evil dark things that will hurt you, whereas umber is a natural shade of brown that is the color of earth. That particular idea of changing it from a word that I find harsh to something natural really struck a chord in me. So now I identify myself as an umberchild.
