As the other girls listened to Eru, Maine's eyes rested on the knife. It was beautiful, but it was still a weapon, a dangerous object made solely for destruction. She knew that from experience. She thought back to a time when she had naively thought that it could be changed.
She licked her ice cream while she and Jules watched the boys across the street skateboard. Jules turned to her and grinned, only to see the expression on her face.
"Nothing." She wrapped her arms around her stomach. "I am just not feeling well." She hoped that would be all, but then his eyes fell on her flask. His face darkened.
"I think I can beat it. Be normal like you." Even as she said it, she knew this wasn't true, that the hunger would win eventually, that she was never be normal. She could tell that Jules knew as well. He sighed and stood up.
"Come on." She looked at him in alarm.
"What? Why?" He just took her by the hand and pulled her up. Her ice cream fell forgotten to the ground as they made their made their way toward the stairs, up to the attic...
She shook her head, as if that could clear the memory from her head. But for some reason she couldn't let go of the past.
