Denver: Waking Up

I was swimming through the ocean, feeling the pull of the waves around me. It felt amazing. I saw all of my friends there; Owen, Fern, Marina, Aya, and…

"Cindy." I rasped, my eyes flying open. I saw her scurry out of a chair and basically fly to my bedside. As she took my hand I smiled at her.

"Hey babe." I said, flashing her a smile. "How's it going?"

She looked about ready to laugh and slap me at the same time, but instead she just hugged me.

"Don't ever do that to me again, you hear?" she said into my shoulder.

I laughed. "I'll try not to."

Owen came over, and we gave each other our secret handshake; a high five. Yeah, we're creative.

"Glad you're back, bro." he said with a smile on his face. But then it dropped. "But seriously, be careful next time, ok?"

I looked around the room. "Was it really that bad?"

Everyone nodded. Cindy had tears in her eyes.

"That piece of glass cut a very important artery." Her eyes locked on mine. "You-you almost d-died, Denver." Cindy burst into tears, her head buried into my shoulder.

Except for the sound of Cindy's crying, the room fell silent. For once, I didn't feel the need to crack a joke or make a wise comment. I just left the room in silence, holding Cindy close and telling her I was fine.

Until the door opened.

The End
