“Pst, fern,” Denver whispered, “look who I found.”
Fern gave Denver an annoyed glance before heading toward his next class, it was only a second before he realized that this wasn’t just Denver being himself but rather that he had found Aya and turned back around.
“But, I thought you said you didn’t go to Lighthouse High…” Fern trailed off.
Aya blushed and looked away, slightly embarrassed. “Yeah…I don’t.”
“But then why…oh…” Fern started but then trailed off as he took in Aya’s still damp clothes and realized she had been out all night in the storm. He smiled bashfully at her. “I’m sorry, I should have realized.”
Aya shook her head, still avoiding eye contact. “It’s ok.”
“Let’s skip school today and figure this all out,” I suggested, ending the awkward moment.
“Alright, let’s find the other two girls then,” Denver said with a grin.
“Uh-huh…we all know which girlyouwant to find Denver,” I replied with a grin…earning myself another elbow to the gut. It didn’t repress my grin however.
“Shut up Owen,” Denver said with a grimace.
I was feeling particularly playful today and decided that a little immaturity never hurt anyone so I proceeded to sing a little ditty. “Denver and Cindy sitting in a tree…” that was as far as I got before I was forced to take off running down the halls with Denver hard on my heels. After I put a somewhat safer distance between us I began to call over my shoulder, “K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
“SHUT UP!” Denver yelled at me between gulps of air. I only grinned and ran harder before coming up to a corner and skidding around. I misjudged the turn though and ended up slamming into a wall. Denver slowed down and walked up to me laughing as hard as he could while breathing so hard. I got up and dusted myself off, grinning as well. “Well that was fun!” I exclaimed with a grin as Aya and Fern walked up, sporting grins of their own.
Just as they caught up I got a glimpse of red hair around a corner and took off running again. “Not again Owen! I’m…done chasing you!” Denver called after me but I just ignored him and quickly caught up to Cindy. Marina was with her.
Marina saw me first and took one look at me, “Oh, it’s you…”
I grinned at her. “What? You mean I’m not your very best friend?” I asked with a wry grin. I was in a playful mood however and so let my faint dislike of her stop there.”After all,I reasoned, while she did steal my dinner…it was just food…even though she should know not to mess with a guy and his food…no I wasn’t going to let that go anytime soon. “We found Aya asleep in the home-ec room and we’re going to take the day off to discuss…stuff…care to join us?” I asked, directing the question at Cindy rather than Marina.
“Who is us?” Asked Cindy.
“Us is all the other mermaids.”
