On the run again

I watch as Gabby wanders back to the machine and starts beating it up again. I guess I should be more annoyed at her for trying to read my email, but we've all done it haven't we? Just a quick glance to see what it might be about or who it's from.

Joey... I haven't seen her in... oh, months. Only, the last time I saw her, she was wielding a gun, and shooting at me. That was fun.

Well, maybe not, but hey, I'm still here. Just about.

I sigh, closing my eyes and regretting, for the billionth time, what I did to Gabby. Because - in case you hadn't guessed - Joey is hunting me because I'm a vampire. Sure, we worked together, but she's a very dedicated woman, for which I still admire her. Even if she is deadly. Thing is, the email I got, though we used to be friends, is not friendly, not at all.

Alex, I cannot believe you! Somehow you survived the last couple of years, and I do not wanna think about how. But now you've turned someone else?! You know, if you'd hidden properly, I wouldn't be writing this, and I wouldn't be sending Mickey out to America right now to come and find you.

Not only were you stupid enough to turn someone else, but you've been using the company credit card! I thought you were cleverer than that, but clearly, I was wrong.

For your own sake, I hope you let yourself burn before Mickey gets there.

Joey.

She wrote that not so long ago. I figure an early flight from England will get here in roughly eight or more hours. Enough time for a new bus to get here? I bloody hope so, or I'm going to die, right here, in a crappy motel because Beth refuses to take breaks from driving. And, knowing Joey, so will Gabby.

Gabby turns around and sees me staring at her. I blink and try to smile. She tilts her head to the side a little and mouths "what?" at me. I get up and walk over to her, hugging her from behind.

"Nothing," I mutter as I kiss her cheek.

"there's obviously something wrong." She frowns.

"What makes you say that?" I ask innocently, smiling. She shrugs.

"You were looking at me weird." Of course I was. There's a hunter on his way, right now just to kill little old me. And possibly you. Why wouldn't I be looking at you weirdly?

"Sorry," I mumble, trying to keep the smile on my face.

"Please tell me what's wrong?" she pleads with me and I give up on the smile. I know I should tell her, but I don't really want to. How do you tell someone they're quite likely to die soon?

"Joey is..." I sigh, "she's a hunter. I used to work with her sometimes before I got turned. Only now she, and her mates, are on a mission to find me and more or less make sure I don't pass any knowledge on. They see me as a bigger threat to them than any other vampire, since I know so much about hunting." That's more or less it. Apart from that tiny, little detail where they know about her.

"What do you mean by 'make sure you don't pass any information on'? Are they gunna try to kill you?!"

"Yeah...  They've been trying to kill me for two years. We should really get away from here. I know we only just got back, but until we have another bus, we're like sitting ducks." I grimace and kiss her again. I don't want to have to keep running,

The End
