The bus pulled over to the side of the road, and let a new guy on. I pondered going over to him for a second (as is my usual occupation), but then Alex walked over to a seat beside the bulky man and started talking to him. I really didn't want to face the vampire.
I slouched back down in my seat, planning on staying there for a while. Or at least until Alex decided to stop being a total dick. Yeah, I know it's my fault. Shut up.
But then I heard a sort of hissing sound, and, looking over the top of the seats, I saw thick grey smoke billowing out over Alex and the new guy, enveloping them completely in the swirling tendrils.
Not being able to see Alex made me nervous.
Without thinking, I stood up and marched to the front of the bus, holding a hand over my nose and mouth to stop the smoke from choking me. Not that it made much of a difference - I'm a vampire.
"...that hurts." The unmistakable sound of Alex's voice stopped me in my tracks. All I could see were shadows, but his tone was saturated with pain beneath the sarcasm.
I had no idea what to do.
It wasn't like I could just go up to them and pull the hulking form off of my friend, force him to stop hurting him. It just didn't work like that. Sure, I was stronger than I used to be, but if Alex was having problems, then what's to say that I could do any better?
Ah, what the hell.
I lurched forward and raised a fist high above my head, ready to smash it down on the newcomer's skull.
