"I'm sorry, Alex! I f*cking suck at this!" I stood at the bottom of the stairs, blood up to my elbows and soaked down the front of my shirt.
The vampire was sitting beside the woman's unconscious husband, a tea towel wrapped tightly around his wrist to stop the blood flow. He looked up at me as I spoke, taking in my appearance. "Wha?"
"I couldn't stop the blood. I tried, I swear I tried! It just kept coming and it wouldn't stop and I was so thirsty... I think I killed her, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to. I'm sorry!" I babbled at him, rushing to explain. Before I finished, he'd pushed past me up the stairs, moving faster than I could see.
I followed after a moment, using the banister for support as I pulled myself up the steps. My knees had gone all weak and wobbly. Oh God, what if I had killed her? She'd just wanted to help us. That was it. And we took advantage of her because of what we are and it was... evil.
"I-is she okay?" I hovered behind Alex at the top of the stairs, watching anxiously as he did as much as he could to try and save her.
He sat back with a sigh and shook his head.
I sat down, feeling suddenly faint. "Sh*t." Head in hands, I felt the tears roll down my face as I whispered. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I couldn't stop it. I'm sorry."
Alex shuffled across the floor to hug me, but I instinctively cringed away. I'd done the complete opposite of what he said... how could he not hate me?
"What?" He asked, frowning.
"You told me not to kill her..."
"You couldn't stop it; it was an accident."
The tears kept coming, and I wiped my arm across my face, completely forgetting about the blood and managing to smear it across my face. "A stupid accident." I spat, angry at myself.
Alex reached across and wiped the blood off my cheek tenderly. "But still an accident."
I turned to look at him, studying his face and taking in his expression. So forgiving when he shouldn't be, his blue eyes full of sadness... yet so much love.
