Terror strikes through me as a person started attacking us through the shadows. But, I was useless. I couldn't do anything, nothing at all. I looked around for a possible weapon, hoping it would help me at least defend myself. That's when I see the broken off branch. I run and grab it, then I hold it like a baseball bat.
I walk up behind the shadow man as he was having a magic fight with my little brother, Soren. Then, with all my might, I slam the stick into the back of his head. He stands for a moment, stunned when Soren, Derrick and Kiandra use a barrage of magic on him. He faints to the ground, knocked out but not dead.
"Who was that?" I ask.
"I don't know?"
Later that night, while the man was still knocked out, Derrick and Kiandra were taking care of him. I was sitting alone under a tree, looking at the moon and Soren came by and sat next to me.
"Hey, how are you doing?"
"Not good. I'm practically useless."
"We'll find a way to get your powers back."
I shake my head. "No, we won't."
There was silence.
"You know," I start, "I've been thinking about my last wish."
I smile. "You know, your sister-in-law, she died about 13 years ago. But, she was all for the humans. In fact, it was her that gave me all the knowledge about the lack of food and the worldwide starvation. We went to the Magister Lord of the North to convince him to stop persecuting us. But, it didn't work out so well. He... he killed her and then I killed him. That's why Pelastor's dad took over, the Magister Lord of the East."
"So, what does that have to do about your wish?"
"He was talking about the darkness of humans, and how we were all supposed to die. That's how he justified keeping the drought. And, you know, I started listening to him. But, now that I am no better than a human, I feel bad for them. So, I know what I'm going to wish for."
"For the rains to come and the drought to end?"
"Yeah." I pause. "Soren, I want you to promise me something, before I... you know. Die."
"Remember me. Remember me because I'm doing this for the sake of the world and it won't turn out so well for me. I never told you before, but I have a son. I want you to promise that you will tell my son how I died when this is all over and when you've finally done what you're here to do. He lives in the hangman's forest with Avantra looking after him. His name is Thomas, Thomas Bernard Aquos."
Soren took a deep breath. "Ok, I will."
I nod and smile, and then a lone tear runs down my the left side of my face. "I'll miss you."
"I'll miss you too."
I wrapped my arms around my brother and I started crying over his shoulder as he cried over mine.
Then, through tears I said. "I wish that the drought would end and that for as long as the human race exists that the earth would feed them and the oceans would give them drink."
And with saying that, I died in the arms of my brother. And then, the sky cried.
The End of Vand's Tale.
