I dressed despite the pain on my back. When I'd finished, I lay down with Evan again.
"I don't want to go." I admitted, stroking his hair. He tilted his head and kissed my wrist.
"You have to."
This was different. Normally he would have taken this as an excuse to keep me locked up with him. It hurt a little.
"Why?" I asked, tracing the outline of his ear with my thumb.
"Because. I need to sort myself out. This deadline is getting harder to wait for."
I smiled. It was still strange to me that anyone found me this enticing, but I knew how he felt. Or how I thought he felt. I knew he had his phoenix to contend with as well, but if his desire for me was anywhere near as strong as mine for him... I rolled off the bed, taking a deep breath once I was standing.
"You're right." Being too close to him was like sticking water in front of someone who'd been in the desert for almost three days without it. I grabbed my bag. "Try to find your sister today ok?"
A dark shadow passed over his face and I frowned. Every time I'd mentioned his sister recently his reaction had been different, darker. I wondered if it had anything to do with him seeing her with Alex.
"Well, I'll see you this evening." I said, blowing him a kiss before hurrying out the door.
I wasn't really focussing as I rolled down the street on my board. I was thinking about Evan, about his sister, about his phoenix, about his lip, eyes, body...
"Woah!" I fell off my board as I collided with someone. "Sorry!" I called as I climbed to my feet. The board had rolled several feet away. I looked at the person I had collided in to.
He was muscly, good looking, with dark eyes and an even darker expression on his face as he stared at me.
"Sorry." I repeated and offered a hand to help him up. He disregarded it and stood on his own, glaring at me.
"You." He said, and then seemed to pause and think. The dark look disappeared from his face. "It doesn't matter. I wasn't watching where I was going."
"Neither was I." I said, grabbing my board as a kid tried to steal it, giving him a bar of chocolate instead. He ran off grinning. "You're not injured though right?" I turned back to the man.
"No, not injured. Are you?"
Something in his voice made me think that he wished I was. I stepped back.
"No, I'm not. Who are you?"
"My name's Hades, and you are Serena."
I did a double take.
"How do you know my name?"
"I know lots of things. I also know that you must be starting to hurt now. It's at that stage. But don't worry, I'll end the pain soon." He laughed then turned and swept off.
I bit my lip. His tone had suggested I would never feel pain again. In the dead sense. I threw down my board and jumped on it, heading back home.
I had to tell Evan.
