God his lips were hard to pull away from.
"I know." He whispered, releasing me. His hands had begun to snake their way up my back, reaching for that clasp. I'd had to stop him. He'd regret it... and I was starting to believe I would too. My birthday had become this date that I reached towards in hot anticipation. I had never looked forward to anything, let alone my birthday, this much before. It had given me a new lease on life. I walked the corridors at school with more of a bounce, and people didn't seem to want the throw water at me, or push me in to lockers any more. I mean they still didn't particularly like me, but they didn't go out of their way to hate me.
"I love you." I whispered, and he repeated the statement. Statement. It sounds so dry and unfeeling. For something like that it should be a little more romantic... but I digress.
"Have you ever thought about..." I stopped, not wanting to go on.
"Well... what if I get my powers... on my birthday?"
"What about it?"
"Well... we might get so distracted by that... we might not..."
"Are you suggesting we should do it sooner?" His eyes were hungry.
"No..." His eyes looked disappointed now, and I hastened to reassure him. "I want it to be on my birthday. But I just wanted to know... would it matter to you if I was this, or if I was... if I had my gift when we... you know?"
"No. It wouldn't matter at all. You'd still be mine. And you'd still be you."
"But what if whatever it was gave me some power that made it impossible for us to... until I'd learned to control it I mean."
"Then I'll wait for you."
I kissed him, because that's what I wanted to hear.
I thank the stars for whatever fate brought Evan to me.
