School was the same as usual the next day, up until my last lesson. That was when I was in science with Dilila, and I was dreading it. But something happened that I wasn't expecting.
"Hi." I turned, and saw Dilila smiling at me.
"You want to sit with me?"
I looked around. There had to be something going on. People don't just change overnight. There had to be an angle.
"Nothing's going to happen. I just want to apologise."
Any normal person would have sat away from her, but I liked giving people the benefit of the doubt.
"Ok..." I sat next to her and ignored the stares of her friends.
"So..." She said, staring at me in what I recognised as a slightly forced good humour, "How did you meet my brother?"
It all made sense now!
"You know, you don't have to pretend to like me just because of your brother..."
"That isn't an answer." She said, her teeth gritted slightly. I blushed and looked away.
"I met him at school. And then we've seen each other round town a few times."
"Uh-huh. And people you meet around town generally get angry when someone pokes fun at you?"
My blush darkened. He'd got angry over me?
"I-I..." Thankfully our teacher walked in and saved me from making any more embarrassing sounds. I spent the entire lesson with my head buried in my book, and when the bell rang I grabbed my bag and skateboard and moved as fast I could to get out of the room and down the corridor to the exit. I heard Dilila trying to catch up to me but as soon as I was outside I ran down the steps and jumped on my board.
I had a feeling that Dilila wasn't exactly happy that her brother was spending time with me.
