"But how can this be?" I asked in amazement.
The king shook his head. "I don't know." I shook my head. I couldn't believe it. Who would steal the sugar? Everyone was allowed to take some. So why bother stealing it all?
"Do we have any sugar in reserve? Were any precautions taken?"
"That was our sugar in reserve. And never in a million years would we have thought that someone would steal the all sugar."
Well, we can get more, right?"
The king sighed. "Yes, but it will take years to replace all that sugar."
I frantically tried to think of of something else, but my mind had gone blank.
"What about the candy crop? They need sugar to grow."
"We'll try to think of something. We can't let this bring us down." He smiled, but I could see that it did not quite reach his eyes. I nodded and left, almost bumping into Mr. Mint on my way out. We couldn't replace all the sugar in time. The only chance we had was to find the thief before it was too late.
