As Shade cried as a phoenix, and it landed, I sat stroking it, holding it close to my chest. It felt strange. I had always seen phoenixes as being perfect, and here I was now, comforting one. Weird. I shook my head, and told Shade all that had happened between Jeremy and I. It looked outraged.
"He left you alone?! After all that?! That little..." Shade didn't get to finish its sentence. I closed its beak. "Don't day a word against him. He wouldn't have hated Cult if he was in the Company. No. He's not. He's in something else though."
The phoenix laid its little head against my chest, and I held the bird to me, thinking of Jeremy.
