We'd got to Witt's door before I smelled it. That smell I recognised so well, the smell I knew from clubs for the night world, the smell I knew from the many places I had visited.

"Witt, can you smell that?"

"Smell what?"

He took a deep breath in then nodded. "Damn. I wasn't told we would be having visitors."

"Well apparently we do. And it's close."

"Yes, it certainly is." His head jerked towards Rose's house. "And I think I know where it's coming from. But we can't just go busting in and demand an answer. They might not know about it."

"It would explain Rose being so terrified of me."

"Yes, but it could also just be that she has better senses than most humans, and she can smell the blood on you. Or she can sense that you wanted to drink her."

"Hmmm, maybe."

"Anyway, it shouldn't distract us from tonight."

"Witt, can I just ask you something?"

"Why do you love me?"

"Because you're beautiful, funny, clever...the list is endless."

"So can you wait for me? Because I normally do this with humans to drink them, so I've never done the dating someone I won't drink thing. Will you let me have a few more days to get used to this?" His face darkened in disappointment, but then cleared.

"I suppose I can wait a few days."

"Thank you." I kissed him on the cheek and ran swiftly across the grass to my house. As I opened the door I looked across at Rose's house. It would be able to smell us too, and you can bet it wouldn't like it either.

The End
