Demrin returned to the warehouse alone after seeing the others home. John remained bound where he had left him. Taking a seat beside the necromancer, he released the bonds. Neither man appeared willing to broach the silence between them. Finally, John spoke up.
“I believe the shape-shifter has escaped. Katarina had a recent surge of anger; she has marked us so we know when she wants us, she can contact us. Jester has fled”.
“Well that is a relief; one less thing for us to deal with”.
“You don’t understand. Katarina is in a rage; an uncontrollable rage. She is probably out there feeding on anything she can find. She is going to be unstoppable if we do not do something; and soon”.
Demrin stared at John. Things were spiralling out of control. He did not like it. He helped Scott to his feet. Their eyes locked; both men knew what needed to be done. The past must be put behind them. They had to work together. Demrin extended his hand, and Scott took it. A smile crossed Demrin’s face as he saw his old friend returning.
“It’s good to have you back, John”. They teleported.
Demrin smashed in through the front door to find Calla, Lukah, Adder and Reuben waiting on the other side. They appeared to be deep in conversation. All eyes turned to him as he entered.
“Demrin, what’s wrong?” Calla asked.
“Jester has escaped”.
“But that’s a good thing isn’t it?” Reuben said.
“There’s something else, isn’t there” Calla asked.
“Katarina is in a fierce rage over it. She is on the move; feeding on anything she can find; human and supernatural denizen alike. Soon, she will be too powerful for us to stop. She will achieve total domination. The world as we know it will end. We have to do something; we have to act fast”.
“She’s feeding on people?” Calla was incredulous.
“Demrin, there is one thing we could do; as a last resort if you have no better ideas”. Demrin turned to look at Adder as he spoke. “We could enlist the help of The Blood Council”.
Demrin stared at the vampire for a moment, and then nodded. “I’ll leave that to you, Adder. They won’t help one who is not of your kind. But we will need all the help we can get”. Adder nodded.
“Demrin, what else are you not telling us?” Calla asked; she knew him too well, she must have seen it in his face.
“I.... have found us another ally”.
“Well that’s good right? We need all the help we can get, you said so yourself”.
“I know I did; but you may not like the source of this help”. He turned and whistled once out the open door. After a moment, John Scott stepped through. Calla hissed, Adder took on a wary stance; as did Lukah and Reuben.
“What is he doing here?” Adder asked.
“I am here to fight with you. I am here to help you destroy Katarina. I realise now that it was a mistake allowing her to return to this world”.
“He allowed me to enter his mind and read it. He will not betray us. He will help us to battle and defeat Katarina”.
“Demrin.... how could you?” Calla began to weep, and she ran off into the house. Demrin stared after her with longing; but he could understand her distress. She must feel betrayed; Scott had put her through hell, and now Demrin had gone and invited the necromancer to be a part of their group. He would talk to her later; if she would talk to him that was.
Adder nodded. “I will trust your judgement, Demrin. But if he betrays us, the consequences fall on you”. Lukah and Reuben nodded, signifying their agreement with the vampire’s assessment. Demrin nodded his acceptance.
“I’m going to go and find Ana; tell her about Jester, and about the plans” Lukah knocked Demrin’s shoulder as he went past him through the open door.
Demrin stopped outside Calla’s room, took a deep breath and knocked. He heard a stifled sniff come from the other side, and the shuffling of her feet as she crossed to open the door. He thought for a moment her eyes lit up as she saw who it was; but then the anger returned.
“What are you doing here” she spat at him.
“Calla I came to talk.... and to apologise”.
“I don’t want to talk to you, or see you Demrin. How could you bring that bastard here? How can you trust him? After all he put me through, and Adder, and you for fuck sake. You have betrayed me Demrin; I do not think I will ever be able to forgive you this time. Now fuck off and leave me alone”. She slammed the door in his face, and for the first time in thirty years, Demrin felt a tear slide down his cheek at the hurt he felt inside. Calla, the one person he had always counted on, no longer wanted to know him. He had lost her. He headed for his own room. If she hated him, he had no reason to carry on living. Once this was over; once they had defeated Katarina, he would end it all. Adder would protect her. She would be happier without him.
