I woke up on a lounger by the swimming pool. Connor was swimming. I could see he had a great body as he cut smoothly through the water. Connor... Oh gosh! I had just remembered last night. Or at least, some of it.
"Connor, what did we do last night?" I called anxiously.
"You're up," Connor said, smiling, heading to the side closest to me. He climbed out. He picked up a towel and began to dry himself as he approached me. He sat down on the edge of the lounger I was lying on. "Last night... Hm, d'you want me to tell you or show you?"
I remembered him reciting beautiful poetry... but then what had happened? It was all so fuzzy. I was extremely worried, especially with the way Connor was watching me.
"Um, tell me please."
Connor sighed. "Pick the boring option, why don't you? Last night, we shared the most wonderfully romantic stroll of our lives." He grinned. "You're an amazing kisser."
"We kissed?!" I asked, horrified.
"Hey, what's wrong? Am I suddenly undesirable?" Connor sounded offended.
"No, no..." I murmured. "It's just that... there's something I haven't told you."
"Oh." Connor looked confused. "What?"
I gulped and looked down. "I ... have a boyfriend."
"You what?!" Connor shouted. "How could you neglect to tell me that? After last night, I thought we were going to have a beautiful relationship and maybe even get married one day!"
I winced. "Married?!"
"Yes, I'm that in love with you, Vi. And now to find out that you had a boyfriend! That's so wrong!"
"I'm sorry - I must have forgotten. I did think you were awfully brilliant last night."
"You should have told me this before! When I first mentioned being attracted to you!"
"I'm sorry - I didn't want to hurt your feelings."
"Hurt my feelings?! Don't you think that this is hurting my feelings? You let me like you for so long - I was bound to fall more deeply in love with you. You're so... so horrible!"
"Connor, I'm sorry," I said, tears starting to form in my eyes. "I never meant for things to happen like this."
"I hate you, Violet! How could you do this to me? And, ugh, I'm still related to you! I never want to see your face again... but I'll have to, won't I? I'll have to endure visiting you again! I can't bear the thought."
"Please what? Forgive you? Why should I?"
I felt defeated. "I don't know," I murmured. "I think I'm pretty rotten too."
"Too right you are."
"I'll see you later ... or not." With that, I stood up and walked to the house. I didn't look back as I let myself in. I walked upstairs and into my room. I looked at my phone, lying on my bedside table. I knew what I had to do.
I sat down on the bed, switched my mobile on and rang Zack's number.
"Hello?" he said.
"Um, hi, it's Violet."
"Oh." He suddenly sounded cold. "What do you want?"
I was confused. I hadn't done anything wrong before today, had I?
"I'm sorry for not keeping in contact: my cousin Connor's been here."
Zack suddenly sounded hopeful. "Your cousin?"
I wondered at his tone. "Yeah, he came down from Ireland."
"And does he have ... dark hair?" Zack sounded excited.
"Um, yeah, how do you know?"
"Did you go to a restaurant with him?"
"Oh, you saw us?"
"Oh yes!" Zack sounded very happy. "Oh, Vi..." He paused. "I'm so sorry! You'll never guess what I thought."
"What did you think?"
Zack started laughing, surprising me. "I thought you two were on a date! I thought you were cheating on me! How ridiculous! You'd never cheat on me! I should have guessed you two were related, but then, I thought all your family was ..." He trailed off.
"Oh, I didn't know him until my grandma surprised me by saying he was coming down to visit." I felt suddenly guilty. I may not have cheated on Zack then but last night, I had betrayed him.
"That must have been a surprise."
"Yeah... Zack, I have something I need to tell you."
"Er, last night, ... I kissed Connor."
There was silence on the end of the line.
Then finally, "You what?"
