It was a good thing I had that hacker-boyfriend once. That was back when computers were still moderately new. The stuff he once taught me on a "date," coupled with my existing skills was coming in handy.
My fingers flew over the keyboard and my eyes were glued to the console. If I could get the IP address.... but they'd be too smart for that. They'd have scramblers.
I had to concentrate to keep my mind off of the scene we had all just seen. He shot her. Just so nonchalantly. I saw the way she was acting, she'd been raped for sure. Poor girl. Never should something like that be taken from someone. And now she'd have to relive that every day until she died.
The best focusing agent for me now was the fact that I would have reveled at the chance to put a bullet through that b*stard's head. I know that everyone else felt the same way. The darker part of me wanted to torture him before we killed him. But that would put me on the same level as him. But then, perhaps he should go through what he'd done to others. Ah, well, I think we could leave that to Scarecrow.
Man, I was so worried about him. What those sonsof-- those monsters did to him made me want to puke. I wanted to kill them too. Pure evil. That's all they are. They deserve to die.
Calm down, Beth, I told myself and set back to work, save it for the fight. Bottle it up for them, and then explode when the moment calls for your best.
Man, was this hard! They had some good tech to hide their tracks. Of course, nothing less. I mopped my forehead with my sleeve and glanced at the clock. 4 hours! Well, no rest for the weary.
I'd been trying everything and nothing was coming of it. A back door... how about that? Nope... WAIT! Numbers started appearing on the screen.
Something else encrypted. Something else to work on. But it was a break.
I jumped as a hand rested on my shoulder. It was Jagan.
"You all right, Beth?" He asked.
"I'm fine... Sorry."
"How's it coming?" He peered over my shoulder at the screen. "Looks confusing..."
"It is. It's going fine enough. I think I hit a snag in their system."
"Yeah, just waiting for the program to execute right now."
"Hm. So if it's doing its thing, shouldn't you take a break?"
"Oh, that would be nice."
"Come on, then." He took my hand and led me away from the computer. It was late. The corridors were dark and no one was in sight. Jagan took me to a room with a kitchen and coffee maker. He made me a cup and set it down in front of me.
"Sooo..." He said after a few minutes of pretty much staring at each other. "Are you still mad at me?"
I sipped the drink and let the warmth of the cup seep into my hands. "Yes, somewhat..." I didn't know what he wanted to hear.
"I'm sorry that you're mad at me, but I'm not sorry that I did what I did, Beth. your brother needed to talk sometime or he was going to go crazy... if he wasn't already."
I smiled at that last part. "Yes, I understand why you did it, Jag, but... well, I don't know. It just seemed like you were invading his privacy. My brother isn't a man of words, but action."
"True." We sat there in silence for a few moments. I heard a beeping. The computer! I raced back to the console and looked at the screen. The program was working! The numbers thinned and an IP address popped up!
"I'll go get the others," Jagan said.
"I think I have a location!" I could help but yell! We were one step closer!
