I squirmed when Foster asked me what happened. It wasn't something I wanted to remember. Then again maybe it was better talking about it. Ugh I just don't know.
"Well I don't know if you knew about Marissa?" I asked quietly. "Sure the girl you were with last time I heard about you." he replied leaning back in his chair.
"Yeah well I don't know if you ever heard how we met. She was a hostage on the Marlin Davis case 4 years ago and after I walked in and took out twelve guys single handedly and rescued them all she decided she wanted an introduction. I don't know what she was expecting Foster, I really don't. But anyway, somehow I ended up taking her for dinner, don't ask, wasn't my idea, and I did. We were living together three months later. Then about 3 years ago I took the Omega case. As you may have known it didn't go too well, but at least we got the president out alive. I got in a tussle with one of the main men and nearly got my throat slit." I indicated the scar I had and he nodded for me to continue so I went on. "Just missed my carotid artery, put me out of action for a few months. Beth came in to see me and we exchanged a few words..." I trailed off and he looked at me funny. "What happened Crow?"
"She told me to quit my job. Told me I shouldn't go around putting my useless self in danger because I was only destroying my parents's lives with worry. She didn't stop to think that maybe, just maybe I was happy doing what I do. She told me not to bother talking to her and that I was going to end up very rich but very alone. She screamed it at me actually, Marissa was there too. She agreed with Beth. I don't understand why any of the women in my life seem to want to change me. Marissa gave up last week, she walked out. Said I was too unfeeling."
I stood up and started to walk away when suddenly Dani came flying down the stairs, tears streaming down her face, and crashed into me. "It's not true, tell me it's not true!" she sobbed into my jacket. I looked at Foster over the top of her head and shrugged, raising my hands to show my confusion. Dani just clung to my jacket like a lifeline and I patted her awkwardly on the back to try and comfort her. After a few seconds though I realised she needed a reassuring hug so I wrapped my arms around her and tried to get her to calm down enough to tell us what the hell was going on.
