She does not answer the phone. She is fast asleep, in a world that can do her no physical harm. The absorber of that initial impact is her father. He knows he recognizes that voice on the other end of the line. It takes him a moment to realize it's the voice of his daughter's best friend's father. One of the kindest people he's met. The man that once brought his family food in a time he was too weak to provide it himself. The father of a girl he described on several occasions as "a sweetheart" and "one of the nicest girls ever". Why is he calling at six in the morning? Is he okay? That father finds out that he, in fact, is not.
