I couldn't stand seeing Dan's dad like this. He used to be so full of life, and now he just lay there, all tubed up. It made me cry. I left the room, feeling too upset to stand just looking, unable to do anything. I went to the drinks machine and paid for a bottle of coke, then sat down on one of the chairs to wait.
"Aimee?" I looked up, surprised. "Hey, it's Catarina, from school."
"Oh yeah, hi."
"What are you doing here? You're not ill are you?" She looked genuinely concerned.
"No no, a friend of mine, his dad's got cancer and I came to see him."
"Oh no, did you know him very well?" She sat down next to me.
"Yeah, I kind of did. We used to get along so well. It's, strange seeing him so helpless."
"I know. Oh bless you," she said as I felt a tear roll down my cheek. I wiped it away quickly and she took my hand. "It's ok to cry Aimee."
"I cry to much." I cleared my throat and changed the subject. "What are you doing here anyway?"
"Oh, um, just a check up," she said playing with her shory spikey hair. "You know, after that illness I had last term."
"Oh yeah, right. So is everything ok?"
"Yeah, it's great."
"Yeah. Well, I gotta go, my second job is calling me."
"You have two jobs?"
"Yeah, just temporary, while I get my new house sorted out."
"I didn't know you'd moved."
"Yeah. Well the house belonged to the ex so I couldn't really stay."
"Oh I'm sorry."
"No it's fine." She stood up and so did I. "Well, it was nice seeing you Aimee."
"Yeah, it was nice seeing you too."
We both paused awkwardly, then laughed.
I turned and saw Dan and Stephie coming out of the visiting room. I hugged Dan, he smiled slightly, and the we left, with mixed emotions and tears in our eyes.
