“You called me Aimee…” I said slowly, finding it strange that he was using my full name. He’d never done that before.
“I know, it is your name,” He joked, “the ball’s in your court – what do you want?”
I want you, that’s what I want. I want to be with the guy that always chooses me over anyone else. I want to be with the guy who makes me laugh, who makes me smile. I don’t want to be with the guy who thinks he needs to get with as many women as he can. But I can’t say that to him. Not yet. Not now.
“Can we talk privately? When we’ve stopped for the night?”
“Yeah, sure.” We drove for several more minutes until I spotted a camp site.
“Pull in here.” I pointed, and Harry twisted the steering wheel. He parked as I went and paid the guy at the desk for one night’s stay. Then I went back to the van in time to grab a sandwich from Louise and Flo. Harry gestured to me to take a walk with him. I followed him through the caravans and campervans already parked until we reached a quieter spot where we could see the moon. It was almost full, and an ethereal pure white which made me catch my breath.
“So, you wanted to talk?” He asked, sitting down on the grass. I followed his lead and we sat side by side, staring up at the moon.
“Look Harry, I don’t know how long I’ve liked you for, but I know that I’ve resisted it for a whole lot longer. I’ll make no pretence; I’ve seen the way you treat girls, and I don’t like it. What’s more, I don’t want to be one of them. “
“I think, if you don’t mind me speaking?” He paused until I nodded, “I think I’ve only been dating so many girls because I was trying to find the girl that I could be myself with... and all along I never noticed that the only person I’ve ever managed that with is you.”
I blushed, and tried to hide my face by leaning against his shoulder. He put his arm around me.
“So it’s Mr. Smooth Talker tonight is it?” I asked, making a joke which I often made about the way he smooth talked his way in to getting girls to go out with him.
“Hey! I’m trying really hard to be sensible here!” He tickled me as if to undermine his point.
“Stop! Stop! I don’t want you to be sensible; I want you to be you.”
“That’s the only person I can be when I’m with you.”
“Good, because that’s the person I fell in love with.” As soon as the words were out of my mouth I realised that that I could not have sounded less cool. I watched Harry’s grin spread on his face, until he was pulling the ‘aha! Gotcha!’ look. At this point I tackled him and pinned him to the floor in a tickle-fest. When Harry begged me to stop (he’s particularly ticklish on his sides) I rolled away and sat up laughing.
“You see, there is no one else i would have done that with. If a girl tried to tickle me, I’d pin her down and tickle her back. But you can have your way with me because you know where my spots are.” He winked at the innuendo.
“Harry, you’re a sex addict.”
“Says little Miss Greedy.”
How am I greedy?”
“You love sex so much you want it with men and women.”
“Oh so that’s it! You’re only attracted to me because you think you’ll get a threesome out of it!”
“Definitely not. Anyway, I can make any girl do that for me.” I frowned and he laughed. “I’m joking!”
I was satisfied and rested my head back on his shoulder.
“So what do we do now?” I asked. It seemed so perfect. Too perfect; it was like a fairytale.
“Well you could kiss me.”
“Oh no Harry, I’m not kissing you yet. We’re taking things real slow. That way I can be sure you’re sticking around because of me and not just because there’s no other girl on the road that will have you.”
“I’m pretty sure Louise wouldn’t mind... Joking again!” He yelled as I poked him hard.
“I know when you’re joking. If I didn’t I’d have fallen out with you years ago.”
“You love me too much to do that. Admit it.”
“Not until you admit you love me.”
“So you don’t?”
“No I do.”
“Oh it’s ok. I think it’s sweet and manly that you told me.” I grinned and let him help me up.
“Come on, we’d better get back before they realise that something’s going on.”
“Harry? Come here.” He turned to face me and I reached up and kissed him briefly on the lips. He took my hand and pulled me closer, kissing me softly. I wrapped my hands in his messy hair and allowed myself to be pulled in to his embrace. His kiss made me tingle, and I sighed as he released me. There were no fireworks around our heads. Instead I felt like my body was a firework, and when he’d kissed me I’d exploded. That’s how it felt. I grinned and grabbed his hand to lead him back to the van. “No kissing in front of the others alright? Let’s try and keep it a secret for as long as possible. I want to see if Flo figures out that we’re dating.”
“Alright you little sprite. Always up for tricks and a laugh aren’t you?”
“You wouldn’t love me any other way.”
