I knew he wanted me; that much was obvious. It was bound to be my fault. I was about to step forward, negotiate with this Aleksei bloke and do a trade - me for Flo. But then Lou shouted and Harry tackled him.
I felt the bullet hit me in the shoulder, sending me to the floor. I grimaced in pain as the rest of my body shuddered. I was losing a lot of blood and I knew right there that this was it. My ears were still recovering from the shot as Aimee started shaking me and Flo checked me over. I think she was shouting at me but I couldn't quite make it out.
Then Lou came into my field of vision. She looked concerned, as if she was about to cry.
"Never been better." I wheezed, struggling to breathe. She leant down and hugged me and for a moment it felt like the pain would just disappear.
Then she left to keep hold of that man who had shot me. I tried to pull myself up to get a better look at him but it didn't work; I couldn't move. I watched Aimee smiling weakly at me, applying pressure to the wound. I could feel cool tears running down my face.
Her face shot away from me as something happened. Aleksei had overpowered the others and was getting away, dragging Lou off with him. I forced myself to get up but my shoulder sent waves of uncontrollable pain through my body. Every time I blinked my eyes stayed shut for longer.
I caught Ian and Flo sprinting after them, Harry just behind. Aimee stayed with me, even after I begged her to go. "Please." I mumbled hoarsely.
"No." she insisted.
"Why is it always me who gets shot?" I asked, a weak smile penetrating my dying face.
"You're going to be alright." She smiled softly but it didn't work.
"Aimee. I need you to listen." She looked at me, the fear still present on her face. She nodded slowly and I told her everything they needed to know - what I thought was going on, who was behind it all and why. My story took longer than it had done in my mind as I coughed and spluttered after every few words.
"Why are you telling me this?" she asked, leaning in closer.
"You know why." I whispered, my voice nearly gone. She cried more and I felt her tears splash onto me, some hitting my wound. "Will you do me one last favour?"
She nodded. "Anything."
I coughed again and watched little specs of blood come out of my mouth. "Two messages." I whispered. "Tell Harry." My head felt heavier all of a sudden - I was running out of time. "Tell him he has a great girlfriend."
She sobbed loudly. "How?"
"Just doing my job." I tried to wink, to seem playful but it didn't happen. I tried to move my arm but it didn't respond.
"And tell Lou." I felt my eyes close, my body finally stopping. "I love her and." I opened my mouth one last time but nothing came out. I could still feel the tears cascading down my face. I tried again but it didn't work.
Then she stopped applying pressure to my wound. I forced my eyes open and saw that she wasn't there anymore. I moved my eyes to find her. She wasn't alone.
Guy had his arm around her throat and was covering her mouth. He looked at me and frowned. My eyelids fell and I couldn't see them. I felt him press the bottom of his shoe onto my wound and inwardly grimaced. I managed to open my eyes once more but I only just saw Aimee get dragged away. There was nothing I could do.
The last thing I saw before I drifted away was the face of a man - Claude - kneeling down beside me, a phone in his hand. "It'll be ok." he whispered but I knew he was lying.
My eyes shut once again and my mouth closed. I strained for another breath but it didn't come.
