“What do you want Apollo?”
Nyx’s words, though marred with exasperation, were like music to my ears. I was standing by a small pond that appeared unremarkable compared to the immense architectural buildings nearby, itching with anxiety. At the sound of her voice, most of my tension evaporated.
“Answer me Apollo. I don’t have time for your childish games. What do you want,” she repeated in an icy voice. I could see Nxy’s dark outline against the cold light of the moon. Her eyes, I imagined, would have been full of distrust and caution. I opened my mouth, but all that came out was a frightened squeak.
“You came,” I whimpered. Ashamed at how vulnerable I sounded, I fixed my sight on my bare feet that no longer radiated golden light. “We need to talk.”
“Talk? Is that all?”
“Yes.” She laughed. It was harsh and sarcastic.
“Apollo, you never want to just talk.”
She glided towards me and grasped me by the chin. It was surprisingly painful.
Ignoring my small cry of pain, she turned my head so she could hiss into my ear. “I don’t know what kind of act you’re trying to pull, but I’m not buying it!” She brought my head back round to face her again. Even this light I could see that her expression was venomous. “What is it that you really want? And cut the helpless act.”
Her grip tightened and I groaned.
“Stop,” I gasped. “It...Hurts...” There was a loud crack as my jaw bone shattered underneath her touch. Agony exploded in the bottom half of my face and it rippled out until it consumed my whole body. It was excruciating!
“Apollo,” Nyx’s voice was mostly swallowed by screams – my screams. “Apollo,” she cried louder. It came from above me. I had not realised until now that I was raving about on the ground. Its rough surface scraping against my back was nothing compared to the unbearable sensation in my jaw.
Nxy’s arms went around me as she hauled me upwards. I scarcely noticed that she was opening a portal to her realm. Instead, I remained enveloped inside flames of pain that were gradually, but thankfully, eating away at my consciousness. By the time we had entered the dark realm, I was out like a light.
I woke up to find myself on top of the dark goddess’s bed. The old, immortal me would of grinned roguishly and thought that I had spent a daring night of passion with Nxy. If I had smiled then, there was no doubt it would hurt. Besides, this curse had changed me. For the better or worse, I was yet to find out.
Hesitantly, I lightly prodded my chin and sucked in a sharp breath. It was obvious that some had fused my jaw back together, but it was extremely tender. Even if I was a g-d, it would still be tender, I added to myself. But if you were still a g-d, you wouldn’t have shattered your jaw, a nasty voice inside my head replied.
Nxy strode in and glanced at me.
“Oh good, you’re awake.”
“Thanks for the apology,” I said, trying not to move my mouth too much. She attempted to hide the smile of amusement that was appearing. Then her face became solemn.
“Try not to talk much, as difficult as it is for someone like you,” she advised. She sat down on the king-sized bed, her hands trailing across the crimson bed sheets. It was so like the days when we were lovers that I had to refrain myself from reaching out to stroke her arm.
Nxy flicked her head towards me. I thought she was going to ask me about my curse (if she did not already know about it), but instead she surprised me by asking me something else.
“What happened to us?”
