Jade

“Hold up!” Jake shouted to me jogging back to my side. I hadn’t really got to know anyone personally since I’d got here and it was nice to talk to someone. I turned and waited as he caught up, he was good looking, he had tanned skin and a mop of messy but attractive brown hair. His eyes were a deep brown and seemed endless when I looked into them, I smiled as he strolled to my side,

“Can you morph into an imaginary creature?” I asked,

“What do you mean?”

“Like a unicorn or something?” I asked, he grinned,

“I haven’t tried, I’ll get back to you on that one.” I smiled back, we walked into the lounge area and he collapsed on a sofa, gesturing for me to join him. I sat next to him and closed my eyes, I was still adjusting to the time difference,

“It must suck being from the southern hemisphere,” he said, I opened my eyes,

“Totally, I mean, most of you are only like an hour apart, time-wise. I’m completely out of it half the time, right now in Australia it’s 2am.” I explained, “And my brother is probably out of his mind worrying,” I groaned,

“What’s his name?” Jake asked,

“Max, he’s the best. He’s 19 and I don’t know what I’d have done without him,”

“Why?” Jake turned to look at my, with my new improved eyesight I could see each individual colour in his eyes making up the brown iris. There were flecks of purple and green and blue and red, it was weird, I shook my head to clear it,

“Two months ago…” I began, I swallowed the bile in my mouth, whenever I thought about my parents I felt truly sick, “My parents died in a car crash,” Jake’s face fell and he rubbed my arm soothingly.

“If it’s an condolence my parents are never around anyway,”

“At least they’re alive,” I replied, he nodded slowly, “It’s just my brother had to go through it all, he found it hardest, he then had to look after me and now I’ve suddenly disappeared leaving him alone. Only two months ago he had a family and now he’s alone, he probably thinks I’ve run away with Zack.” Jake’s face hardened, I wouldn’t have noticed if it were not for my good eyesight,

“Who’s Zack?”

“An old friend,” I lied, he’d been my boyfriend for four years, I was sure I was going to marry him. Jake nodded and wrapped his long arm around me; I rested my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes again.

When I next opened them there were more people in the room, I blinked and looked to see my head was rested in Jake’s lap. I sat up,

“Afternoon sleepy head,” Jake whispered, I rubbed my eyes,

“I wish I’d taken a photo of that,” Luke laughed, “You were literally asleep in his arms,”

“I wasn’t really, my head was in his lap,” I replied smiling, I looked at my watch, I’d been asleep for three hours. “You could have woken me up Jake, you couldn’t have moved an inch with my heavy head pinning you down,” I explained, he smiled slowly his eyes alight,

“You looked so peaceful and I didn’t really mind, it was a bit painful when your head landed in my lap.” He grinned and motioned my head landing hard into his lap by hitting his fist against his knee making a thump, I grimaced. “I was also tempted to morph into a spider and crawl over your face, but I didn’t think you’d appreciate that.”His grin widened,

“I’m not afraid of spiders, us Aussies have huge ones, bigger that your British money spiders,” I teased. “I’m talking tarantulas,” Ben gulped.

“Does anyone here feel it necessary to use the house telephone?” Eve asked walking in holding up a portable phone,

“Awesome!” I cried and Eve threw it to me,

“I haven’t used it yet, I wasn’t sure what to tell my parents,” she said. I dialed the number but didn’t press call,

“Here goes nothing,” I said, everyone watched as I held the phone to my ear. It rang once, twice, three times.

“Hello?” said a voice I recognized,

“Max!” I cried, there was silence,

“Jade?” he asked slowly,

“It’s me, I am so sorry!” I cried tears welling up,

“Where have you been? I’ve been worried out of my mind. I filled a missing persons report. I’ve contacted the police. I’ve yelled at Zack, he didn’t know anything either!”

“Calm down,” I ordered, “Something came up, I’m not sure I can tell you what it is. I’m just going to say it’s very very very important, I’m not sure how long I’m going to be away. I promise I’ll come back,”

“Swear you’ll come back!” Max ordered,

“I swear on the grave of our parents and sister,” I said strongly,

“Good!” Max said, “Who are you with? Anyone I know?”

“No, no one you know, they’re all really nice. I’m not going to go into details, you’d never believe me if I did. I’ll tell you everything when I come home, but for now, bye,”

“Don’t go!” he cried, “I really miss you,”

“I miss you too, I have to, there’s a queue for the phone,” I said,

“Ring me?”

“I’ll see if I can. Bye Max, love you.” I said before putting the phone down,

“Well handled,” Eve praised. I got up,

“I need some time alone,” I said to everyone, “if you need me just call or ask Marc.”
