Evan: Instincts

Evan Brough

The bell rang for lunch. I took my time getting my stuff into my bag. After all, there was nobody waiting for me, so why rush?

I looked up, expecting to be alone. Instead, I found that new girl, Ada, standing there.

"Can I help you?" I said, in what I hoped sounded like a hurried voice. Swinging my bag up onto my shoulder, I waited for an answer.

"Well, actually, yes you could." She said with a smile. "Since I'm new here, nobody has shown me round and I feel a bit lost. Could you show me round a bit? Maybe we can grab lunch after that?"

I paused and thought about it. Did I really want to get involved with someone else? I just wanted a friend.

"Okay. Follow me." I said. I saw a sense of achievement quickly flush over her face, but it was gone as quickly as it had arrived. "Well, okay then - I'll show you round."

We paused halfway through the tour to grab some lunch. I was  even more confused now than I had before we'd started. What was Ada so interested in? What did she see in me? What did she want?

"This is where I spend most of my lunch break." I stated. "So, unless there's any questions...?"

"Just one." she said slowly. "Do you mind if I join you? I haven't go anywhere else to go."

I kept my face free of any emotions. Was this what I really wanted?

"Sure." I smiled, opened the door and waited for her to walk in.
