Rowan was wandering around the camp, talking with many of the people there, learning about their stories and telling them parts of his. It was during one of these conversations when he noticed Jem and Kate talking and decided to jump in on their conversation.
He came in time to hear Jem talking to Kate. "I was thinking we could raid the Sheriff's gold stores that night, and have a couple scouts there on the dance floor to keep an eye on the Marshal and his men. What do you think?"
"I think that's a good idea."
Jem looks at me with a look of impatience, "We were talking."
"No, I know, but I believe I may have something to say, something to tell you."
Kate's face softens to me, "Like what?"
"Well, there's something I've wanted to redo when it comes to Corin. You all know about my escape from Hamish and how it didn't exactly work so well for me, right?"
They nod, and Jem speaks, "What are you getting at?"
"Send me, and me alone, to crash Corin's ball. As long as I have a sword he will not win this time."
"But he has guards, they'll kill you before Corin does."
"Not quite, you see, I am officially a knight, Sir Rowan Ash Kerr is my name. Though I no longer grasp for that title, for reasons I'd rather not tell you. As a knight, it is my right to challenge someone to a duel. They cannot refuse, and they cannot have any help. It would be Corin and I."
Kate turns to Jem, saying something with her eyes that Rowan didn't quite understand.
"No," Jem finally says, turning to Rowan. "We'll need your expertise in taking his gold during the ball. It would be better to do it that way than to have you cause a scene at the ball. Trust me on this."
"But I could-"
"No, Jem's right," Kate interrupts. "We'll need you more for your breaking and entering skills than your battle ones."
Rowan look at the ground, dejected. "Alright, we can do that then."
"Don't worry Rowan," Jem says, trying to soften the situation. "You'll get your moment, it's just not now."
Rowan perks up, "Well, let's talk about how we're gonna break in."
