I sat on the couch, my elbows resting on my knees while I chewed my thumbnail in thought. I’d propped the painting of Samiel up against the wall and had been staring at it for the better part of a week, trying to think up a way of getting her back. But to be honest, what were the chances of it? It was me against Death. If I’d had the devil on my side then maybe it could’ve been done but unless there’s a way to visit him or something, I was out of ideas. I sighed, figuring I should probably feed, and dragged myself off the couch and into my room. I picked up a bag of blood and pierced the thing plastic with my teeth, ignoring the stale taste of the blood that was way beyond its use by date. And that was when it hit me. Sure, the devil and shit like that’d make a worthy opponent for Death but y’know what’d work even better? Life.
I rushed back into the living room, kneeling down in front of the coffee table and lighting a candle. There wasn’t really any significance in that, I just knew she liked the scent of it. I sat cross-legged in front of the coffee table and shut my eyes.
“Mistress, if you can hear me... I need you” I said calmly, staying focused.
I heard someone sigh. “You again?”
I smiled as I opened my eyes, casting my gaze over the physical embodiment of life. She was gorgeous with a perfect hourglass figure and everything about her screamed out life and fertility. I’d only ever called on her once and then was when I’d changed my mind about immortality and begged her to make me mortal again. Yeah, she turned me down...
“I need your help”
“Robin, we’ve been through this. I won’t give you back your-”
“No, it’s not that” I said, shaking my head. “I need to get someone back from Limbo”
A look of sadness flashed across her face. “You know I can’t bring back the dead”
“She’s not dead”
I nodded. Oh, I’ve got your interest now, have I?
"Death, get your ass up here now" I said once I’d explained everything to Life. She’d fucked off to see if there was anything she could do but I was getting impatient.
"Hey, Robin" Death said as he appeared.
"How's Samiel?” I asked, kind of smiling.
"She ran off. I believe she's in the grove with Elioth"
"Yes, he won't move on. Bit of a nuisance"
"I want to see him"
"You're not dead" he smiled.
"I might as well be"
He shrugged. "What do you want?"
"I wanted to warn you not to get too used to Samiel being stuck down there with you"
"Why is that?"
Life appeared then, a lazy smile pressed to her lips.
"What do you want?" Death asked, gritting his teeth.
"Nothing" she said innocently.
Death huffed. "Well, if it’s nothing I'll leave"
Life leant over my shoulder, her fair hair draping down over my chest as she whispered in my ear. “Admit you love and he can’t keep her”
Death looked on curiously. "You've made a deal with Life, Robin"
I nodded. "Awesome, huh?"
"Then your contract is broken" he said. Wait, what?
He held his palm out to me, a bright ball of light shooting from his palm and into my chest. Life watched kin of curiously as my undead heart started to beat again. And to begin with, it fucking hurt. But I didn’t let it show.
"Now, you’re mortal and human" Death chuckled.
"Great” I said sarcastically.
Death smirked. "Bye Bye"
"Don't I get a goodbye fuck?"
"If you want one"
I grinned, not really sure what I was doing. Buying myself extra time, I suppose.
He glanced at Life, who looked like she’d lost interest in the situation. "Unfortunately I don't have the time right now"
"Why not?" I asked, kind of upset.
"I have to find Darkness or Samiel as you call her"
"No" he snapped.
I dropped to my knees. "Please, I'm begging you. I'll never bother you again and you can keep Samiel, just... Please"
He sighed. "Fine" e said, grabbing me and pinning me down.
Life disappeared but I could tell she wasn’t far away. I looked up at Death, almost a little scared at what he was going to do.
"Scared, mortal? How does it feel having a heartbeat again?"
He chuckled. "So, sure you want this?" he asked and I nodded.
He stripped me, fucking me as amazingly as last time. It felt even better as a human and fuck, I even thought about letting him keep Samiel for real but then all this would’ve been for nothing. I kissed him a little sloppily as he pulled out, my breathing heavy.
"I forgot to tell you something" I said.
"What?" he asked, looking slightly worried.
"I fucking love Samiel" I smirked.
He looked stunned. "Huh?"
"I. Love. Samiel"
"No, you can't!" he yelled.
"Why not?" I put a hand to his cheek. "Sure, I love you as well but I'd rather have Samiel"
"She'll never grow old you know. She may no longer be mine but she's still darkness" he said before vanishing.
An unconscious Samiel collapsed to the floor where he’d been standing and I picked her up, carrying her to bed and wondering if giving up my immortality was a really fucking stupid thing to do.
