A male barn owl named Shardas was having lunch, which was voles, with me.
"So then, my little brother said, 'But mum, why did daddy eat the scorpion if it was still alive?' to which my mum replied, 'Because he was acting silly. Now eat up and go to sleep.' That night's dinner was scorpions. Dead, thankfully, because you know what would've happened if they were alive."
"They'd pinch and poison your gullet till you died." I answered, shaking my head. Shardas sighed.
"That's what happened to my dad. I found out later that he had been dropped on his head when he was a chick and that's what later caused him to think the scorpion was already dead."
"I'm sorry. I never knew my mum or dad. I was raised by a witch."
"A witch lives near my hollow. I've always wondered what it would be like to live with a witch. Did she ever cast spells on you?"
"Only once before some frog transformed her and threw her into a potion in revenge of his friends. It gave me the power to do this." I transformed into an elf owl then back into a barn owl. I worried he wouldn't like me anymore.
"Cool." He smiled. Inwardly, I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Yeah. The little cat Elli is going to be sooo mad!" I started laughing, until I realized something.
"What?" Shardas tilted his head. I didn't hear or see him. Because of a flashback.
A few months ago.......
Elli tore around the hut in a fit of rage. Her claws sank into several hides of already killed animals. Only the witch and I managed to survive, me by flying, her by running out of the hut. When Elli stopped to catch her breath, I swooped down and grabbed her by the scruff of her neck. Lifting her, I flew over to a isolated cage and threw her in. Quickly latching it, I flew away.
The witch and I had left her in that cage for two weeks.
Back to reality.........
I sat quietly, my eye twitching. Shardas's voice snapped me out of my trance.
"Pelli? What's wrong?"
"I need to get back to the hut!" I lifted my wings and waddled to the entrance of the hollow.
"Why?" Shardas followed me.
"Elli will kill everyone if she gets mad enough. No one knows what's coming except me and the witch. She won't be dead, she's too magical......" Just before I took off, Shardas spoke up.
"Can I come?" Blinking, I flipped my head around to look at him.
"Why?" He shrugged his wings.
"I don't have anything else to do. So, I was thinking I could come with you."
"Sure. Just watch out and avoid the cat." Flapping, we both took off for the hut. I flew really fast, ignoring the fact that I was really noisy.
When we got there, I could see Elli was already started to heat up in her temper because she was hissing at everyone who got close to her. Flying in, I screeched at the top of my lungs.
"Get out! Run for your lives! Elli will kill you!" I threw the slightly open window fully open then opened the door. Everyone looked at me strangely. Except Elli, who was busy showing her fangs. Grabbing Rose, I flew out and deposited her in the field just outside the hut. "Help me!" I called to Shardas.
"Come on! If you want to live, listen to Pelli!" Together, we shooed everyone out of the hut before I went after Elli. I swooped down and grabbed and put her into the exact same cage as before.
