After Spanish the three of us walked towards the cafeteria talking about random things to do around the school. We were queueing up to get our food when I saw Tales sitting alone at a table in the corner. He was engrossed in a book and had no food in front of him and so I piled a little extra onto my tray and told the girls I'd be back in a moment.
They looked puzzled but made their way to an empty table and sat down, talking about dorms and things. I paid no attention and instead I walked towards Tales and placed the tray down in front of him causing him to jump and almost fall off the chair. I noticed the way he grabbed onto the table and hooked his legs around the chair to keep upright.
"I didn't know what you like to eat, so I got a little bit of everything." I pushed it towards him and he looked at me surprised. "I saw you were reading and you looked so engrossed in it that I was afraid you wouldn't think to get something to eat."
Tales looked at me curiously. "You got me food?"
I laughed a little at that. "Well, yes I did actually, I don't like seeing people not eat." he looked down at the book again and then slowly closed it. "I don't know how....em... thank you." he looked at the food again with a slight puzzled expression on his face and then he began to eat. I watched the way he lifted the food and then I noticed that he still seemed to be hanging onto the chair with his legs. I frowned to myself. He's not insane. No definitely not. Could he be different? Like me? I shrugged off the thought and then turned to walk back over to the girls. "I guess I'll see you around." I murmured absent mindedly.
"Wait." I froze and turned back to him. He seemed equally surprised that the word had come out of his mouth and we both looked at each other in silence for a few seconds. "Do you..Do you want to sit here?" he asked quickly, motioning to the table and then looking down at his hands.
"Can I get the girls?" I asked softly, wondering if maybe Tales was just super shy.
"Em.. yeah sure, whatever." he looked like he wanted to run again and so instead of going back to Faye and Soar I sat down in front of him.
"Tales, are you alright?"
He avoided my gaze and stared at the tray in front of him. "I'm... fine."
I nodded. "Ok, I'll leave you to your book , if you want to come sit with me and the girls we're just over there. In fact, maybe you want to be on your own today and find your feet in the school but I'd like if you came and sat with us sometime. Maybe tomorrow? We don't bite."
He just kept his head down.
"It's not good to be alone all the time." I muttered before getting up and walking back over to Faye and Soar.
"What was that all about?" Soar asked me with a raised eyebrow. "Oh he's just a guy I bumped into in the corridor when I first arrived. He was totally into that book he'd forgotten it was lunch and I hate seeing people not eat so I brought him over some food."
Soar grinned. "Yeah sure."
