Every inch was a new level of pain.  His body was so frigid he thought his skin would crack and shatter outward; the water so scalding hot he could not fully process the magnitude of the agony.  His bones turned to glass; dense and cold and fragile.  He was inside his bones, sitting, terrified, in the marrow, overwhelmed by the ache and the pressure.  He waited for the splintering of his skeleton.
