Dinner with Mom was... awkward to say the least. It was obvious from the silence on the drive to the restaurant that this wasn’t going to be a calm, supportive meal. Mom sat opposite me and Damien, staying silent til our food arrived. Damien was pretty awkward, sitting with his eyes down and I wanted nothing more than to give him a hug.
"Uh... So, what did you want to talk about?" I asked and Mom looked at Damien.
"How long has this been going on?"
Damien glanced at me. "I dunno. I wasn't counting"
"I want an answer" Mom said to both of us.
"A couple months, I guess" Damien said quietly and she nodded.
"And were either of you going to tell me?"
He looked at me and I shrugged again.
Damien glanced up at Mom then looked down at his food again.
“Kyle, if this is just a way of crying out for attention..." Mom trailed off as I stared at her.
Damien arched an eyebrow.
"It's just you used to do stupid things when you were a kid if you were feeling ignored"
"Yeah, that was when I was a kid"
"So you could be doing the same thing now"
I scowled at her.
“And especially with him "
Damien looked at me and Mom shook her head.
"You disgust me"
Damien stood and fucked off before I had a chance to stop him. Mom just shoved a forkful of food in her mouth and smiled at me.
“So, now that all that’s out of the way, when are you planning on getting a girlfriend?”
I shook my head in disbelief and went to find Damien. I eventually found him outside having a smoke.
"Sorry about that"
"S'okay* he said with a weak smile.
"I thought she was gonna be okay with it"
He shrugged. "It just caught me off guard"
I flashed him a tiny smile. "Yeah. It's just..."
He shot me a questioning look.
"I don't know, I guess I should've told her"
He gave me a little kiss and I kissed back.
"We gonna go back inside or d'you wanna go somewhere else?" he asked, flicking his cigarette away.
"It's up to you, doll"
"As awkward as it is, I'm thinking you and your mom probably need to sort things out now, rather than later"
I kissed his forehead. "You know what she said isn't true, right?"
"About being disgusting?" he smiled. "Babe, I grew up hearing that. I'm fine. Like I said, I was just caught off guard"
"I was thinking more the bit about this being a cry for attention" I chuckled and he kissed me.
"I didn't need anyone to tell me that she's clutching at straws with that one"
"C'mon then, you" I smiled, squeezing his hand as he held mine.
We fucked off back inside and made our way over to the table Mom was sat at. The rude bitch had kept on eating while we were gone. She looked up as the two of us sat down.
"Didn't think I'd see you again"
Damien didn’t say anything even though it was painfully obvious that comment was directed at him.
"Mom, if you're not gonna be polite, we're leaving"
"Sorry. I just thought he would've been off taking drugs by now"
Damien scowled at her as she shot him a smile.
"Mom, what did I just say?"
Mom didn’t say anything, going right back to eating. Damien rolled his eyes and I squeezed his hand under the table.
"So, when are you going to put all this nonsense behind you?" Mom asked and I sighed.
"What nonsense?" Damien asked, squeezing back.
"I walk in on my son having sex with another boy and you ask me "what nonsense?""
Damien smiled at her, doing his best to be pleasant. "Yeah. I mean, aside from the awkwardness of walking in on your kid having sex, what's wrong with it?"
Mom’s face twisted into an “isn’t it obvious” expression and Damien kept up his smile.
"What's wrong with it is that you're both boys"
"So it's wrong"
"You said that already"
"I'm just emphasising my point"
"But how is it disgusting? I've never understood why people think it is. Enlighten me"
"If you don't know, I shouldn't have to tell you”
"Well that's kind of counterintuitive"
Mom scowled at him and he shrugged, smiling.
"Well it is"
Mom finished eating and stood up, leaving some money on the table. "Well I just hope for both your sakes you snap out of this sooner than later"
"Thanks so much" Damien said sarcastically.
"I'll be in the car" Mom snapped and disappeared.
"Why is it you never get a straight answer out of homophobes?" Damien tutted and I laughed.
He flashed me a smile which I mirrored.
"I'm glad I met you, doll" I said.
"I'm glad I met you too"
I kissed him, humming as he kissed back.
"I'm not really hungry anymore"
"Wanna go back?"
"We can always go to mine, y'know"
"I don't mind"
"Well it'll convince mom we've not gone AWOL" he said with a baby of a chuckle and I smiled.
He got up, taking my hand. I squeezed his hand and he squeezed back. I kissed him on the cheek as we walked out of the restaurant. I didn’t really care that we should’ve called the waiter over to pay, we left Mom’s money on the table after all. I snaked a hand around Damien’s waist and leant my head on his shoulder. C’mon, Mom, what’s disgusting about this?
