Coty watched Simon and Grepher's fight from a point high above their heads. She had smiled to herself as she saw the thinner man scurry away with a message for Rayna. His eyes were wide as saucers as he peered into the shadows, both trying to spot her and praying that he didn't either.
But it was as Grepher's sword spun through the air that Coty lost interest in the fight. Her heart began to beat and her palms sweat at the sight before her. She was not a fan of fire.
Sliding down the rope nearest her, she silently walked up to stand beside Simon. Unlike everyone else, Simon never seemed to be startled at her sudden appearance and disappearances. "Is it him?" her voice sounded a little shaky as she tightened her grip on the railings.
"I'm not sure." Simon glanced sideways at her and watched as she hung her head and her shoulders bunched with anger.
"Simon, it's too soon. I'm not ready." her voice was steady this time but stone cold. "I would rather fight him than have to face her right now."
Suddenly an acrid smell hit her nostrils and she looked up at him, her eyes widening. He met her gaze and both of them spoke at the same time, though it was more a whisper on their lips.
Coty felt her heart speed up. "It is him. He is here. Only he would do something like this."
"Coty..." Simon moved towards the girl but she was gone.
She pressed her back against the wooden crate and breathed in deeply, trying to calm her racing heart. Suddenly to the left there was the sound of a scuffle and she heard a man roar. "CORTANA WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!!"
Spinning around the corner she saw a girl crouching over a body with a knife in her hand. She was decorating the corpse with a series of swirls and lines with a manic grin on her face.
Lee was moving down the stairs towards her but as soon as he caught sight of Coty he froze, looking between the two women with a look that went from shock to dawning realisation. He moved for his weapons but Coty raised her hand to motion to him.
"Lee, no. She's mine."
The other girl grinned up at Coty as she wiped the back of her hand across her face leaving a trail of blood in its wake.
"Hello Cortana." her voice was high pitched and she seemed to laugh while speaking, but it wasn't a pleasant laugh. It more resembled that of a maniac closing in on their prey.
Coty reached to her boot and withdrew a silver knife, all the while keeping her eyes trained on the other girl.
"Sasha." she crouched into a fighting stance. "I am not afraid of you."
Sasha smiled as she mirrored Coty's stance. "Sounds more like you're trying to convince yourself of that Cortana."
"I told you never to speak my name!" Coty lunged and Sasha laughingly responded, her cackles echoing all around the ship.
The fight barely lasted five minutes as Sasha whipped a pistol from under her jacket and aimed it at Coty's head. "I'm bored of this game." she grinned and Coty froze and closed her eyes, head tilted to the sky as though to accept her death.
There was the small bang when the trigger was pulled but it was quickly followed by a shriek of rage as the wood beside Coty's head exploded in a shower of chippings.
Coty's eyes snapped open and she smiled as she caught Sasha's eye. "You're still an awful shot." she grinned.
"HOW DARE YOU! I might have missed you this time but I still killed your parents Cortana you little wench." Sasha screamed and made to throw herself at Coty but stopped as a man emerged from the shadows to stand beside the other girl.
"Asher Saint." she smirked. "The man himself emerges from the darkness. I think this will be pleasing news for my master."
She leaped over the side of the ship and was gone, her cackles echoing in the darkness.
Coty looked up at Asher and nodded her head, acknowledging the man's presence in her time of danger. He inclined his head and then vanished almost as quickly as her. Him, to a secluded spot where he could be alone with his thoughts, and her to the highest point she could find.
Sasha's words echoed back to her while she sat and watched from above as they approached the towering inferno that was once a haven of goodwill.
"I might have missed you this time but I still killed your parents Cortana you little wench."
Coty opened the locket around her neck and stared sadly at the picture of two identical little girls before closing it and tucking it back inside her shirt.
"They were our parents." she whispered, the wind catching her words and whisking them away where nobody could hear them.
