CarmenMature

One last check in the mirror. Hair, curled and looking good. Favourie red top and denim shorts, party ready. Make up done. I came out of my room to be faced with the party in full swing. Shane had done a good job, everyone looked like they were having a great time and were getting to know each other. I grabbed a drink and wandered to the main lounge where the music and dancing was. I recognised a girl who had been in my dance class first lesson.

"Hey, I'm Carmen."

"Hi, I'm Melinda." she said.

"Good party isn't it?"

"Yeah deffo."

"Carmen!" I turned to see Shane weaving her way through the crowd. "Hey."

"Hey you."

"So what do you think?"

"If I ever need a party planning, I'll come to you."

"Great. Um, do you think you could, um, well, come perform with me? Just a quiet jam session. nothing big. Please!!" She pulled the puppy dog face.

"I, um, ok fine!" I waved at Melinda and let Shane drag me through the crowd to a little stage in the corner. She'd already got my guitar for me. "You know I am going to get you back for this don't you?"

"Good."

"Why good?"

"Well it means we're going to meet up again."

I felt my face flush. To hide my embarrassment I picked up my guitar and fiddled with the mic. "Any particular song?" I asked.

"You know Heather Nova-It's only love?"

"Yeah, it's a favourite."

"Me too. Well you sing first verse, joint on chorus."

"Sounds good." Everyone turned to watch, or to dance in couples. I glanced at Shane, and saw she was looking at me too. Butterflies burst in my stomach, but I began.

Me: I used to think that I knew what we needed
I just assumed we would always be fine
Now I don't think that we lost the feeling
But we, let everything build up inside

Both: It's only love
But love... should make us strong
It's only love
But love... has been hurting so long

Shane: What a challenge, honesty
What a struggle to learn to speak
Who would've thought that pretending was easier

Both: It's only love
But love... should make us strong
It's only love
But love... has been hurting so... long

Me: And it's all, a part of me
It tears at my heart only
Love...
And it's all, an eternity
Hoping to learn only
Love...

Love...

Shane: There's a part of you I'm trying to reach
Still a part I don't know
Tell me, is devotion a gift or a thief
Do you wish I'd let go

Both: It's only love
But love... should make us strong
It's only love
But love... has been hurting so... long

And it's all, a part of me
It tears at my heart
Only love
And it's all, eternity
Hoping to learn
Only love

Only... Only love... Love...
Only love... Love...

The last chord sounded, and everyone burst in to applause. But all I could do was look at Shane, and she looked back at me. We only moved when the next song came on and Shane asked me to dance. We moved to the floor, and she wrapped her arms round my waist. I put mine round her neck.

"You were really good," she said.

"So were you. You're amazing on the guitar."

"Well then maybe you'd like to work together. We could go to clubs and do karaoke, or we could just practice in school. It'd be really cool."

"I'd like that."

"Me too. By the way, you look stunning this evening."

The End
