Hadley: Phone CallMature

“What do you mean?” I asked, staring into his eyes and trying to hold my nerve. That and collapse from how dizzy I was.

“I mean I’m not done with you yet” he said, pulling me back over to the bed.

Wow. All that time I’d been joking about getting raped by Caleb or Maxxie but nope, it was John that was going to… Oh, okay. I don’t even want to know why he’s got handcuffs next to his bed. He forced my arms behind my back, playing on the fact that for me the room was spinning, and snapped the handcuffs around my wrists.

“I’ll be back later, sweetness” he said almost sweetly and walked out of the house, locking the front door behind him.

Which was when I blacked out again.

When I woke back up I was sat on a chair. Did I mention I was tied to it? Okay, why had John tied me to a chair? In what looked like the basement… But with a bed?

I glanced around and saw John stood playing with my phone. He looked over and smiled at me again.

“Nice to see you’re awake at last, sweetness. Maxxie’s been calling you” he said, wiggling the phone at me.

“No wonder” I mumbled and he didn’t seem to hear it.

“Hasn’t called in a while. Maybe he’s given up on you…”

I bit my lip as a wry smile slid onto his face. But it got wiped off soon enough as my phone rang again. John frowned and looked at the phone as if it was about to bite him. He smiled again soon enough and ambled over to me.

“Listen, Hadley, I’m gonna let you answer this. And you’re gonna tell Maxxie you met up with your good buddy John at the diner and you talked things out with your folks, okay? You’re gonna tell him you went and saw Cayden and everything with everyone’s fine thanks to your pal John-o, okay?”

I nodded. Well I’m hardly in a position to argue, am I? With a smile, he answered the call and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Hello?” I asked, even though I knew who it was.

"Finally! Where are you?"

"I'm... I'm at home" I said, glancing at John.

"Oh" he paused, "you okay?"

"Yeah. I went out for some breakfast and saw John"

"He didn't drag you back to your place just because I wasn't there?" he said, starting to sound kind of angry.

"No, we... We talked it out. And then I came back and talked things out properly with my folks"

He paused again. "Why do I get the sneaking suspicion you're not telling me the truth, Hadley?"

I laughed a little at that. Am I really such a bad liar? "I guess cause I've been kinda reluctant to in the first place"

"Kinda? You flat out refused. Fine, if you really did change your mind and go back to see them, but if that bastard John dragged you back..."

"He didn't. I... I went and saw Cayden as well"

I heard him light a cigarette and frowned a little, even though he couldn’t see it. "Hadley, where are you? Honestly?"

"Sat on my bed at home. Let me guess, you wanna know what I'm wearing?" I said, trying not to laugh. That and trying not to cry. I’d rather be sat on my bed at home than sat here.

"MInd if I come over? Say half an hour?"

"Now's probably not the best time..."

"No, it wouldn't, because you're still lying. John, I know you're there."

"You're just paranoid"

"It pays to be paranoid sometimes."

I sighed. Why couldn’t he just believe me? John was getting edgy. "Look, the reason it's not a good time is because Cayden's coming home in like an hour"

"With broken ribs?" he laughed slightly, "I'm fairly sure they don't let you out that quick."

"...He punched one of the guy nurses in the face"

There was silence on his end and I almost started to wonder if he’d hung up. Or if my battery died or something.

"I... It's nice to hear from you"

"Why'd you say that?"

"No reason"

"Now I have    reason     to be paranoid. Makes it sound like you're not coming back. Even though all your stuff is still in the motel room."

"I'll have to come pick it up tomorrow or something"

"If you're so eager to get back home, I can drop it off, if you like" he said, sounding stung. I’m sorry, Maxxie. I’m so sorry.

"It's alright, I can wait"

"No, no, it's fine. I'll sit out Alex's fight and come over." He said and hung up. Shit.

John frowned and threw the phone on the bed. He stood in thought for a moment or two before humming slightly and slapping me, hard. I hissed a little as my cheek started to sting. I instinctively went to reach up but found my hands bound behind the back of the chair. C’mon, Hadley, did you really expect any less?

“What am I gonna do with you, Hadley?” John mused, scratching his chin.

“Drop me off at home so I’m there when Maxxie shows up?” I asked hopefully and earned myself another slap. This time John patted my cheek but in all fairness it just made it sting more.

“Oh I don’t think so, sweetness. We can make things a lot more fun than that”

The End
