The phone call came through and I didn't stop and think for a second. I jumped in the car and sped off to the hospital. I must have got about three speeding tickets. But I didn't care.
I sat in the waiting room while they saw to Annie. I'd called Jake and he was coming straight over. I'd already bitten through on plastic cup with angst before they allowed me to see Annie.
I walked in to the room and felt sick. She was lying there, looking pale, and hooked up to a drip and some breathing equiptment. It was her lungs. Something was wrong.
"Annie! Annie, are you ok?" She looked up at me blearily.
"Not really." Her voice was croaky.
"Annie, I'm so sorry!" I took her hand in one of mine and put my other hand on her forehead. She was clammy.
"It's my fault. If I hadn't..."
"Ssshhh, silly Rosa. It's not your fault."
Jake burst through the door.
"Annie! Annie! Move!" He shoved me out of the way and grabbed her hand.
"I'll just leave you two alone." I walked out, Annie staring after me, and went to find the nearest drinks machine. I sat against it with some sort of fizzy drink and sighed. Poor Annie. It couldn't be easy for her to see how much Jake and I disliked each other. I stood up as a nurse went by, determined to find out what was wrong with Annie's lungs.
