"Of course I'll be your maid of honour." I felt a tear run down my cheek and brushed it away.
"Oh Rosa don't cry!" Annie came round the table and hugged me.
"Well Liliana's asleep...Um, Annie?" Jake had come out of the bedroom. He was glaring at me slightly.
"Yes, I will be your maid of honour Annie." I say, and stand up, annoyed at the look he's giving me. "I'll see you later." I walk out and get in the car.
I don't know where I'm driving, I'm just annoyed. How dare Jake, a man I've only just met give me that look. Will I never be able to even hug Annie again? I stop and look out. I'm at Kate's house. I get out and knock on the door. She opens the door.
"Rosa, what's the matter?"
"Annie is engaged to a man she met three days ago, and he hates me. He won't even let me hug her."
"Oh bless you, come in." She ushers me in to her hall and takes off my jacket. "Oh, were you going out?"
"I was going to, until he glared at me for hugging my best friend."
"Oh come here." She hugs me and I just stand there, clutching her to me. "Let's get you in the warmth." She takes me to the living room. I look around.
"You have a nice house." I mumble.
"Thanks. Here drink this." She passes me a cup. Hot chocolate.
"No problem." She sits next to me and puts her arm around me. I turn in to her shoulder and cry for a good ten minutes. Then when I'm finished she strokes my hair. "See, it's not that bad. You'll always be her friend."
"I know. I'm just being stupid."
"Yes you are." I punch her lightly.
"Well, now you owe me."
"Alright, what do you want?"
"Help with what?"
"What are you, some sort of crazy scientist?"
"No. My experiment is to see whether jealousy can sometimes lead people to extrodinary things."
"Ok, I don't think I like where this is going." I smile though, so she can see I'm joking.
"Well, if we got someone to pretend they were going out with you, then I can judge whether Annie is jealous or not."
"Oh god not you too. Last time we broke up some of my friends tried that one. It made her run away."
"Well, now she's got a fiancee."
"alright, just because I know she won't care we'll do it. Who's the girl?"
"Well, anyone of your friends."
"Nope, she knows them all...well, all except you."
"Yeah. Only I did mention you were straight."
"Well just pretend that I told you that to keep you guessing."
"You are actually planning this aren't you?"
"Oh dear. But what happens when she doesn't believe you?"
"I'll kiss you."
"Yeah right, like you'd dare you little straight chick." I tickled her and she rolled off the sofa laughing.
"But I would!" She sat back on the sofa and pinned my arms down. She leaned in and gave me a peck on the lips.
"Oh yeah, cos that was a kiss." I said, rolling my eyes.
"Just a taster. We want Annie to get the good stuff."
"Are you actually serious?"
"Well yeah. And if she sees that you're happy, she might stop worrying about you and be happy herself. That's what you want isn't it?"
"Yeah, it is."
"Well then. Let's go out!" I rolled my eyes but followed her. This was interesting. And I wonder whether it really will make Annie react.
